Review: Sigma 20-60mm F2.8-4.0 DG | Contemporary by Amateur Photographer

“Overall, the Sigma 20-60mm F2.8-4 DG is a really nice little lens that does what it’s supposed to do with little fuss. It’s small and easy to carry, focuses quickly and accurately, and delivers very
respectable image quality. In fact, I struggled to find any meaningful flaws.”

Indeed, I’ve enjoyed using this lens more than I expected. Usually, I find standard zooms that top out at 60mm to be frustrating. But the extra versatility of the 20mm wide-angle end makes up for that. I used it to shoot landscapes and cityscapes, and found it to be extremely well suited to these tasks.

I could also see this lens being particularly popular as an everyday zoom for travel photography. It’s a refreshingly portable alternative to more conventional 24-70mm f/2.8 or 24-105mm f/4 options, for when you don’t want to carry so much weight.

“For walkabout, street and travel photography, I often find that I want to squeeze more into the frame than my 24-70mm standard zoom will allow. The result is that I’ll need to carry an additional ultrawide-angle lens and endure the chore of swapping between lenses more often than I’d like to. I love that the Sigma 20-60mm f/2.8-4 DG Contemporary gives me all the extra viewing width that I crave, without lopping too much off the long end, compared with a more typical 24-70mm zoom lens.

I’m really impressed that Sigma has been able to design this lens with its ultra-wideangle potential, while delivering excellent image quality in a package that’s refreshingly compact and lightweight. Sure, the inner barrel extends at longer zoom settings but that’s only natural. And although it has a variable aperture rating, it’s faster than is often the case. All in all, I think this Sigma lens is a small wonder, and a bargain at the price.”

“It gives you that genuinely wide 20mm at one end, but you can still zoom all the way to 60mm. And somehow Sigma has managed to put all of that into a lens this small. I don't really think of this as an alternative to a 24-70. I think of it as a wide-angle lens with a zoom.”

“It's sharp, even wide open. Sharpness across the frame is good, chromatic aberration is very well controlled, distortion is minimal and it handles shooting towards the light really well.”

“For travelling, walking around a city, landscapes, street photography, vlogging or simply taking a camera with me because I might see something interesting, I think I would rather have this.”

Review: Sigma 20-60mm F2.8-4.0 DG | Contemporary by Krolop & Gerst

It’s amazing how compact and light this lens is. And now that I’ve had a chance to try it out, I’ve realised, how underrated the 20-60mm focal length is. Most people tend to use a 24-70mm lens. But I find that those extra 4mm of wide-angle make a big difference in everyday use.

The variable aperture bothers me a little. My dream lens in this range would be something like a 16-50mm f/2.8. But then, of course, you wouldn’t have the compact design anymore. All in all, however, this 20-60mm could well become the new standard for E- and L-Mount if you want to travel light and keep things compact. And you can achieve a bokeh with this lens.

The AFworks quickly and accurately. I never found its performance to be lacking. Sigma has succeeded in making the Lumix 20-60mm kit lens faster, smaller and more capable. And that’s pretty impressive.
