Blue Moon rising over Haute-Pointé, French Alps 🇫🇷 — photographed from Nyon, Switzerland 🇨🇭

The second full moon of May 2026 — a Blue Moon — rising over the snow-capped peak of Haute-Pointé in the French Alps, seen across Lake Geneva from the ramparts of Château de Nyon. No tripod, no camera — just an iPhone balanced along a 12th century castle wall. Sometimes the moment doesn’t wait for the right gear.

The orange colour of a rising full moon is caused by the same atmospheric scattering that produces red sunsets — moonlight travelling through a thicker slice of atmosphere near the horizon, scattering the shorter blue wavelengths and leaving the warm orange tones behind.

Weekend in Nyon, Canton Vaud, Switzerland 🇨🇭

Château de Nyon with Mont Blanc keeping watch on the horizon. The castle dates back to the 12th century, built on the site of a Roman settlement overlooking Lake Geneva — one of the most historically layered views in Switzerland. On a clear day the Alps reveal themselves across the water, and today they delivered.

Nature, red in tooth and claw — Black-headed Gull colony under attack at Neeracherried, Switzerland 🇨🇭

A Yellow-legged Gull invaded this nesting colony and took two chicks. This frame captures the second chick being taken — look closely at the bottom left and two more tiny, frightened chicks can be seen cowering in the vegetation as chaos erupts above them. The colony erupts in a frantic mob response, adults screaming and diving from all directions. Moments later the intruder flew off with the chick, pursued by the entire colony. Difficult to watch, but this is what unfiltered wildlife observation looks like.

Skimming the surface — female Common Pochard taking off from Lake Zurich at Halbinsel Au, Switzerland 🇨🇭

That warm chestnut-brown head, pale face and grey-brown body are the key field marks of the female Pochard — far more understated than the male’s striking russet head and grey flanks, but no less elegant in flight. The Common Pochard is a diving duck, spending much of its time underwater — which makes a clean take-off shot like this a brief and rewarding opportunity.

Auffahrt weekend getaway — Lavertezzo, Valle Verzasca, Ticino, Switzerland 🇨🇭

Swapped the 150–400mm for the iPhone. The Verzasca valley is one of Ticino’s most spectacular corners — that impossibly turquoise river, the ancient stone church, the boulder-strewn riverbed and the intensely green hillside all within one frame. A perfect place to switch off for a long weekend.

A brief sun window — and this appeared. Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) in full breeding plumage at Geissen, Wädenswil, Switzerland 🇨🇭
The Great Crested Grebe in breeding dress is one of the most ornate waterbirds in Europe — that dramatic black double crest, rich chestnut and black tippet, and vivid red eye combine to make it almost impossible to believe this is a common resident of Swiss lakes. The elaborate head plumage is used in one of the most choreographed courtship displays in the bird world, involving mirror-image head shaking, diving and the famous w**d ceremony. This individual was in no hurry, which helped. .cameras

The male follows — Common Goldeneye taking off from Lake Zurich, Seeufer Wädenswil–Richterswil, Switzerland 🇨🇭

A beat behind the female, but no less impressive. Wings fully spread, feet still cutting through the surface, that piercing yellow eye and circular white cheek patch unmistakeable even at speed. The bold black and white wing pattern of the male is only fully revealed in moments like this. A late-season encounter on Lake Zurich that won’t be forgotten quickly.

😍Keeping watch😍 — male Eurasian Kestrel perched in the birch canopy at Halbinsel Au, Wädenswil, Switzerland 🇨🇭

The Eurasian Kestrel is most famous for its hovering ability, but elevated perches like this serve an equally important purpose — a high vantage point to scan open ground below for prey. That direct, unblinking gaze is no accident: Kestrels have exceptional eyesight, including the ability to detect ultraviolet light, allowing them to track the urine trails of small mammals invisible to the human eye. Not much escapes this bird.

The Black Woodpecker is Europe’s largest woodpecker, a bird of mature and old-growth forest found across much of the continent but often surprisingly elusive despite its size. The all-black plumage and full red crown — extending from bill to nape on the male — make it unmistakeable when seen well. It excavates large oval nest cavities in old trees subsequently used by a wide range of other species including Stock Doves, Jackdaws, Tengmalm’s Owls and various bats, giving the Black Woodpecker an outsized ecological role as a forest engineer. Its loud, wild call carries far through woodland and is often the first indication of its presence. Today both the call and the bird delivered.

Cloudy Thursday in Wädenswil — perfect excuse to raid the archives.
Blue-tailed Bee-eaters at Alleppey, Kerala, India 🇮🇳 — October 2022.
One bird landing, one already perched, both calling simultaneously — a fraction of a second that took patience (and procapture mode) to catch. The Blue-tailed Bee-eater is one of Asia’s most colourful birds, that combination of green upperparts, orange throat, turquoise-blue tail and warm rufous underwing making it almost implausibly vivid. As the name suggests, bees are a dietary staple — caught in flight and beaten against a perch to remove the sting before swallowing.
