How to create a Rembrandt-inspired portrait setup for around $200💡

For this setup, I used the Godox IT32 flash with a beauty dish, both around $100 each. You can also recreate this with cheaper alternatives and get a very similar look.

I positioned the light to create a classic Rembrandt-inspired lighting pattern, with the characteristic triangle of light on the shadow side of the face.

The result is a timeless, dramatic portrait look using just one flash and one modifier.

How to create this cinematic spotlight look with a setup under $600 💡

For this portrait, I used a 150W RGB Godox light behind the subject, slightly to one side and out of frame, to light the background.

For the subject, I used a 100W bi-colour Godox light with a projection attachment, positioned to the right of the camera at eye level. This creates the circular spotlight on the background while also lighting the subject.

The result is a cinematic, editorial look with just two lights and a setup under $600.

How to create this classic beauty look with just one light 💡

Butterfly lighting is one of those setups that looks complicated, but is actually really simple to recreate.

For this portrait, I used the Nanlux Evoke 150C with a 60cm Octabox, creating a soft but still defined light on the face.

The light is positioned directly in front of the subject and slightly above head level, angled down towards the face. This creates the characteristic butterfly-shaped shadow underneath the nose while keeping the light on the skin soft and flattering.

I then added a white reflector underneath the face to bounce some of the light back up and reduce the shadows underneath the chin and jawline.

The result is a clean, polished beauty look with just one light + one reflector.

How to create Rembrandt lighting with just ONE light 💡
Rembrandt lighting is one of my favourite portrait setups when I want a photo that feels dramatic, dimensional and still flattering.
For this setup, I used the Nanlux Evoke 150C with a 90cm softbox + grid, lent to me by dedotec Switzerland.
📍 The setup:
• Light positioned around 45° to the side of the subject
• Slightly above eye level
• Angled down towards the face
• Subject turned slightly back towards the light
• Grid used to keep the light controlled and prevent unnecessary spill
The goal is to create that characteristic small triangle of light underneath the far eye. This is what gives Rembrandt lighting its distinctive look and adds depth without completely losing the detail in the shadows.
💡 Quick tip: Don’t just move the light. Try rotating your subject instead. A few degrees can completely change the shape of the shadow and the size of the Rembrandt triangle.
And the best part? You don’t need a complicated setup. One light is enough.
