Fencheng feels like a living specimen of an ancient county town.
Once the site of ancient Taiping City in the Tang Dynasty, it still preserves dozens of historic buildings from the Jin Dynasty to the late Qing. What makes it special is not only the architecture, but also the fact that local life continues around it.
The old buildings remain quiet and understated, with little modern decoration. In the evening light, walking through Fencheng feels like stepping through a doorway into another dynasty.
