Guo Lanying, one of China's most celebrated opera singers hailed as a "People's Artist," died at the age of 97 on Tuesday, the China National Opera and Dance Drama Theater said in an obituary on Wednesday.🙏🙏

Guo, whose powerful yet lyrical voice made her a household name in China and one of the most recognizable figures in Chinese performing arts, left behind a body of work that includes some of the country's most enduring songs, many of which remain popular decades after they were first performed.

Some 12.9 million people across China sat for the annual college entrance exam, or gaokao, on Sunday, a pivotal milestone for generations of young Chinese.

The figure, in sharp contrast to 5.7 million at the exam's reinstatement 49 years ago, marks a slight drop from last year's 13.35 million participants. The test will last two to four days, depending on the subjects chosen.

🌏 During the May Day holiday in 2026, trips by foreign nationals to and from China reached 1.26 million - a 12.5% increase year-on-year. Among those entering China, 436,000 came visa-free, up 14.7% from last year.

China has been expanding visa-free policies, allowing longer stays and wider travel. Plus, added conveniences like instant tax refunds for departing visitors make the journey even smoother. ✈️🧧
