An Atlantic Ghost Crab at Praia do Giz (Giz Beach) in P**a in northeastern Brazil. They’re semi-terrestrial — they breathe air but need to keep their gills moist, so they make periodic trips to the water. Taken with my iPhone 17 Pro.

We saw a group of active and curious Common Marmosets while hiking the trails of the Ecological Sanctuary in P**a, Brazil, yesterday.

Marmosets are a type of monkey, but unlike most monkeys they have claws rather than nails, and they don't have a prehensile thumb. They were fun to watch!

Another new species for me, this is the Yellow-headed Caracara, from our Amazon River trip last week. I have seen Crested Caracaras in several places in the US and Central and South America, but these look quite different. The last one is a juvenile.

In Portuguese it is are known as the Carrapateiro, which means tick eater - they are known for eating ticks on a number of other animals including Tapirs, Capybaras and cattle.

I spotted this little Squirrel Monkey climbing and jumping through the trees in the Amazon jungle near Manaus in Brazil on my birthday last week, 5/13/2026. It briefly stopped to check me out, but didn't stay still for long!

A White-throated Toucan, which is a new species for me. It is one of the largest of the 17 or so species of toucan found in Brazil. We spotted a couple of them pretty far away and largely hidden high up in some trees, but I managed to get a few reasonable shots from our boat on the Amazon River near Manaus.

On our recent Amazon river trip we saw this group of giant Water lilies, Victoria amazonica. These can reach up to 3m / 10 feet across. In Brazil they are known as Vitória-Régia or Iaupê-Jaçanã, "the jacana's waterlily", and sure enough we saw a pair of Wattled Jacanas on the lilies, eating and mating. Jacanas have incredibly long toes to spread their weight out, so they are able to walk on floating vegetation.

I was sitting on the patio at the place we are staying in Brazil, near Natal, and I noticed a crazy looking bird that I had never seen before on a nearby electric wire. Apparently it's a Guira Cuckoo. One of their curious habits is that they sleep in closely packed groups - see link in comments. That is now on the list of situations I have to search for!

Southern Lapwings near where we are staying, outside Natal in northern Brazil. They apparently have a nest in the area and are very protective of it. They have this interesting behavior of taking a few steps then lying down and looking around, apparently keeping guard while staying somewhat hidden. If they see anything approaching they are very aggressive and vocal - I have seen them chasing off Caracaras (large birds of prey), a dog, and humans.

Burrowing Owls in Brazil!! We are staying by the coast just outside Natal in northern Brazil, and last night we were walking to the nearby beach and I spotted a Burrowing Owl in the dunes! I went back to the same spot this morning with my camera and found there was a family of 3 with a burrow there! Quite fun and not something I was expecting here :) !!
