Humpback whales lunge feeding for herring. The herring are running in huge numbers here in Sitka and the humpbacks are following. Day 1 of a week in Sitka with NaturesLens The whales 'corral' the herring and then lunge through the fish. Throat pleats expand to hold the immense volume, which is then filtered through baleen plates. The gulls sense the action and wait at the surface to scavenge.

'Fish fail' - a sub-adult Stellar's Sea Eagle tries to bully an adult White-tailed Sea Eagle into releasing its catch. With NaturesLens in Hokkaido.

'Strife on the Ice'. When the drift ice arrives, you can guarantee a squabble over fish between the eagles. Often quite boisterous, there's seldom any damage done, despite the size of those talons. With NaturesLens in Rausu, Hokkaido.

On the first of our 3 days with the eagles at Rausu, the drift ice remained too far North, so the eagles fished from the ocean. Stellar's Sea Eagle picking up a fish, shot a slow shutter speed to convey the dynamics of movement. With NaturesLens in Japan

En route to Rausu we paid a quick visit to the Notsuke Peninsular. The Ezo Red Fox population looks to be doing well; we saw 4 in quick succession. With NaturesLens in Hokkaido.

Continuing the swan theme (because I love swans), but in a different location - Lake Kussharo, Hokkaido. The lake lies in a caldera (remains of an extinct volcano) but there is still lots of thermal activity. The steam in the images is rising from the lake waters where a hot spring enters. It provides open water for the swans and encourages food growth on the lake bed. With NaturesLens.
