The tapir is one of Costa Rica’s most fascinating and elusive mammals. With its distinctive flexible snout, quiet footsteps, and almost prehistoric appearance, Tapirus bairdii feels like a creature from another era. Despite its impressive size, it’s a shy and peaceful animal that plays a crucial role in our ecosystems—acting as a true “gardener of the forest” by dispersing seeds as it moves through the jungle.
