Time for some Sunday sloth trivia! 🦥

- There are 2 species of sloth: 2-toed and 3-toed. Costa Rica has both.

- The green colour in their fur is caused by algae; in fact they carry an entire eco-system on their backs including a species of moth which is only found on sloths...known as 'sloth moths'.

- They p**p approximately once a week, and they p**p one third of their body weight in one go.

- They are color-blind, due to the lack of certain cells in their eyes. In bright daylight they are almost completely blind.

- Nobody knows how long they live for, as they are notoriously difficult to study in the wild.

- Those cute videos of sloths holding an arm out to "hug" or "thank" a human? This is actually their defence mechanism and means they feel threatened.

- They move 3 times faster in water than they do on land

- They are responsible for making avocados readily available....their giant ancestors were the only species with a digestive system large enough to process a whole avocado stone, which they did, and then dumped the seeds (literally) far and wide.

In January this year, I was very proud to have one of my photos on the cover of well-established local magazine Quepolandia. Sadly it was to be the penultimate cover, as the owner and editor died shortly afterwards and the magazine disappeared along with him.

However in the intervening months a new publisher has started a new magazine, inspired by Quepolandia but with its own twist. I'm very proud once again to have one of my images on the cover of this new venture (taken at the 'Iguana Sanctuary' in Quepos - thank you Karen and all the best! 🥰🤩🦎
