I wanted to share a surprise which was waiting for me on the way back, when the dive felt finished.

An ornate ghost pipefish, hovering weightlessly above a feather star—its colors almost impossible to believe. Electric yellows, soft pinks, hints of blue and white, all woven into a body so complex it feels designed rather than evolved.

Not hiding—harmonizing. Not resting—belonging.

One of those encounters you don’t chase… they find you when you’re already heading home.

Sometimes the best part of the dive is the part you didn’t plan.

Tüylü denizyıldızının üzerinde süzülen süslü hayalet boru balığı—renkleri neredeyse gerçek dışı. Elektrik sarıları, yumuşak pembeler, mavi ve beyaz dokunuşlar… Sanki evrimleşmiş değil de özenle tasarlanmış gibi; inanılmaz derecede detaylı bir güzellik.

Saklanmamış—uyum sağlamış. Tesadüfen orada değil —oraya ait olmuş.

Bu balığı aramıyordum da, beklemiyordum da. O beni buldu.

Planlamadığında karşına çıkan bu anlar bazen dalışın en güzel anları oluveriyor, işte bu da onlardan biri.

This male is very much pregnant.

A tiny (1cm) pygmy seahorse, perfectly shaped by the coral it calls home—so precise that it almost disappears into the pattern. Not camouflage… but something closer to transformation. It doesn’t just live here… it becomes here.

And just when you think you understand the rules, nature shifts them.

In this world, it’s the males who carry the future. The female passes her eggs to him, and he keeps them safe until the moment he gives birth to dozens of miniature seahorses.

Small. Silent. Almost unreal.

Nature doesn’t just blur the lines… it quietly redraws them.

Bu beyefendi fena halde hamile.
Mercanın içinde yaşayan pigme denizatları (1 cm) yaşadıkları ortama o kadar kusursuz uyum sağlarlar ki dokunun ve desenin içinde neredeyse tamamen kaybolurlar. Buna sadece kamuflaj diyemeyiz… daha çok bir dönüşüm. Canlı burada yaşamakla kalmaz… buraya dönüşür. Mercanın üzerinde yaşadığını bildiğiniz halde onu bulup fotoğraflamak o kadar zordur ki.

Cebimizdeki bilgilerle doğayı anladığımızı sandığımız anda, doğa bizimle adeta alay edercesine kuralları değiştiriverir.

Denizatlarının dünyasında geleceği taşıyanlar erkeklerdir. Dişi, yumurtalarını erkeğin kesesine bırakır ve erkek de onları koruyarak, bir gün düzinelerce minik denizatı doğurana kadar içinde taşır.

Küçük. Sessiz. Neredeyse gerçek dışı.

Doğa sadece sınırlarla oynamayı sevmiyor… onları sessizce yeniden çiziyor, bizlere de hayranlıkla izlemek düşüyor.

An illusion… or a warrior?

Lit from behind, this leaf fish turns almost transparent—its hidden world suddenly revealed. You can trace its delicate structure, see straight through what usually disappears into perfect camouflage.

Not a drifting leaf anymore… but something far more powerful.
A silhouette that feels almost human.
A presence that echoes a Native American warrior—proud, still, and watching. (Slide to see the closeup on the second photo).

Nature doesn’t just hide.
Sometimes, it reveals.

Bir illüzyon mu… yoksa bir savaşçı mı?

Arkadan ışıkla aydınlattığımda, leaf fish (yaprak balığı)’nın neredeyse tamamı şeffaf hale geldi—gizli dünyası da bir anda ortaya çıktı. Böylece normalde kusursuz kamuflaj içinde kaybolan yapısını en ince detayına kadar bizlere sunuverdi.

Çok daha güçlü bir şeye dönüşen canlı artık suyun devinimi ile sürüklenen bir yaprak değil…

Neredeyse insansı bir silüet.

18+ Rated Photo.

Some interactions in nature lasts just 2–3 seconds.

Mandarin fish are among the shyest creatures on the reef, hiding deep within corals all day. But at sunset, like clockwork, and if they are in the mood they rise together in a delicate dance. The female releases her eggs, the male moves in to fertilize them—and just like that, it’s over.

Blink, and you miss it.

This shot wasn’t just about being there—it was about being ready, patient, and maybe a little lucky. And yes—this is an 18+ moment of nature, raw and real. A frame that stands apart from others I’ve seen before: please see the eggs underneath the duo.

Call it luck. Call it timing. Call it instinct. Call it experience.

I just know one thing — The right person was there at the right time. 🌅🐠

🎲 Who would win a dice game with a dice that has this many sides?

This tiny yellow boxfish covered in black dots looks like nature decided to design the most complicated dice ever.

Only a few centimeters long, it drifts around the reef like a living dice — bright yellow, perfectly dotted, and almost impossibly CUTE. Sometimes the smallest creatures steal the whole show. 🐟🎲

🎲 Haydi tavla oynayalım ama zarımızın üzerinde bu kadar çok nokta olsun, bakalım kim kazanacak?

Siyah beneklerle kaplı bu minik sarı boxfish’e baktığımda, kendi kendime “doğa şimdiye kadarki en karmaşık zarı tasarlamaya karar vermiş sanki” dediğimi hatırlıyorum.

Sadece birkaç santimetre uzunluğunda, parlak sarı, kusursuz benekli ve inanılmaz derecede SEVİMLİ görünüşü ile resifin etrafında yaşayan bir zar gibi geziniyordu. Görüldüğü
üzere bazen bu kadar küçük bir canlı bile başrol oyuncusu olabiliyor. 🐟🎲

Looking at the fish with a fisheye…

A wall appears out of the blue.
Not fish. Not many fish.
A single body made of hundreds of eyes.

They don’t swim — they decide.
They turn — the ocean turns with them.
No signal I can hear, no leader I can see,
yet the whole universe shifts in one pulse.

When a photographer sees a school like this,
he can’t decide what to do —
which lens, fisheye or wide angle —
so I used both (see the second photo).

At that moment I am no longer the observer.
I am the intruder, frozen in their world.

The wall dissolves.
Order becomes emptiness.
And I am alone again in the blue,
trying to remember who was watching whom.

The question is: do they see us like that? 🐟👁️💙

Balıklara, balıkgözü ile bakarken…

Mavinin içinden bir duvar beliriyor.
Balık değil. Çok sayıda balık değil.
Yüzlerce gözden oluşan tek bir beden.

Yüzmüyorlar — karar veriyorlar.
Dönüverirler — okyanus onlarla döner.
Duyabildiğim bir sinyal yok, görebildiğim bir lider yok,
ama bütün evren tek bir nefeste yer değiştirir.

Bir fotoğrafçı böyle bir sürü ile karşılaştığında
ne yapacağını bilemez —
Balıkgözü mü, geniş açı mı? —
ben de iki lensi de kullandım (ikinci fotoğrafa bakın).

O anda artık gözlemci değilim.
Onların dünyasında donmuş bir yabancıyım.

Duvar çözülüyor,
Düzen boşluğa dönüşüyor.
Ve ben yine mavide yalnızım,
kimin kimi izlediğini hatırlamaya çalışıyorum.

Under the magnificent rays of the sun two sharks.
Two directions.

One disappeared into the blue.
The other stayed.
Watched.
Then slowly moved closer.

People often ask me
if I’ve ever dived with sharks and if I’m afraid of them.

This photo is my answer.

Was I afraid? No. I was still — and completely amazed by their beauty and presence.
Don’t be fooled by the distance, they were swimming almost 30cm away from me.

Moments like this make one thing clear:

It is their home. We enter quietly,
with respect — as visitors.

Güneşin süzülen muhteşem ışınlarını altında iki köpekbalığı.
İki farklı yön.

Biri maviliğin içinde kayboldu.
Diğeri kaldı.
Baktı.
Ve yavaşça yaklaşmaya başladı.

İnsanlar bana sık sık köpekbalıklarıyla hiç dalıp dalmadığımı
onlardan korkup korkmadığımı soruyor.

Bu fotoğrafım ile cevap verdim sanırım.

Korktum mu? Hayır.
Varlıkları ve güzelliklerinin karşısında büyülenmiş halde
son derece sakin ve hareketsizdim.
Böyle uzak durduğuna bakmayın 30 cm yakınınıza kadar yaklaşıyorlar.

Bu ve bunun gibi anlar bana hep aynı gerçeği hatırlatıyor:

Peekaboo… I see you 👀🐠

This little anemonefish turned our moment into a game of hide and seek—ducking in, disappearing, then finally popping out from the safety of its home : the anemone.

I captured that one final look, bold and proud, as if to say: “Game over. I win.”

Home, confidence, and a tiny victory—right there in the reef.

Bu küçük palyaço balığı dalışımı bir saklambaç oyununa çevirdi—(evine) anemonun içine girip kayboldu, sonra güvenli yuvasından yeniden ortaya çıktı.

Ben ise onun son bir bakışını yakaladım (mağrur bir
şekilde bana tepeden bakıyordu)… Kendinden emin ve gururlu, sanki: “Oyun bitti. Ben kazandım.” der gibi.

Two tenors singing ??

No,no, just two clown gobies, face to face on the same coral .

Both open their mouths as wide as they can —
this is how they defend their territory.
No biting, no chasing.
Just a clear message: “This coral is mine.”

Because they’re so small, they use body language and sound to look braver than they are.
At that exact moment, it feels less like a fight and more like two tenors singing at full volume 🎶

Tiny fish, big voices.
The reef has its own kind of opera.

İki tenor mu şarkı söylüyor?

Hayır, hayır — sadece aynı mercan üzerinde karşı karşıya gelen iki palyaço gobisi.

İkisi de ağızlarını olabildiğince açıyor — bu onların alanlarını savunma şekli.
Isırma yok, kovalamaca yok.

Sadece net bir mesaj: “Bu mercan benim.”

Çok küçük oldukları için, olduklarından daha cesur görünmek adına vücut dillerini ve seslerini kullanıyorlar.

Along with all the beauty the ocean presents, you sometimes witness its cruel side.

Face to face with an inevitable end.

A parasite latches onto the forehead of a soldierfish.
It will stay there until the fish dies. When the fish finally dies, the parasite will already have moved on to a new victim.
