Cuba is more than its blackouts. It’s a kid giving a wallop of a kick right to your face. (I blocked it but still, damn, that had force behind it).

Life during blackouts.

This one affected the entire country and lasted more than 24 hours. From dominós to the Cuban version of monopoly to having conversation, life went on.

The morning after the first day, I came across someone on the street sharing the power of a generator so people could charge their phones and lights. For free. I stopped and got a quick charge.

My building (pictured in the last two) didn’t have light until the afternoon. That apartment building is from 1928.

After tango on Wednesday, I walked 45 minutes from Old Havana passing by Centro Habana to Vedado, where I’m staying. A few lights like a few people were scattered in the dark. It felt emptier. It is emptier. I could hear the thunderous hum of the generator keeping the lights on at the restaurant. I shot from the vantage point of the pump at the gas station to give context of the Cuba people are living in now.

This man is part of a group of about ten musicians who practice at an outdoor restaurant every Wednesday afternoon in El Vedado. I was out walking and heard a trumpet resound through the air and followed it. After they finished, this particular gentleman was smoking a pipe. I waited a while and finally went up and said hello and asked if I could take a few photos. He happily said yes and said it’s better if it’s natural and unposed. I agreed. This was the first one I took.

This little pizza place in the market on Calle K is a 3-man operation. I come here often and decided to take some photos this time. As I came through the line, I was snapping away and this man said, “Puede, puede.” So I continued. The pizza here is not thin; it’s fluffy with crispy edges and I detected a hint of garlic that day. It’s always a bustling spot, full of people, at lunchtime. The people here are kind and the pizza is good.

More tango at Fábrica. The crazy thing was, I had no idea we’d be dancing a milonga on stage with an audience watching us. Yes, this is us at a milonga and while I wasn’t taking photos, I was out there dancing with the rest. Wild.
