Elephant in Berlin

Elephant in Berlin a photographic blog on Berlin's historical places, buildings and surrounding areas by Dario J Laganà Then it was left in decay and now is a luxury hotel.

History, Buildings, Present, Curiosity, Abandoned, Itineraries, Maps, Breaking the Circle. I’ve started this blog for fun, starting from what I already knew - the Second Great War and the Cold War - to move then to architecture, factories, small oddities, the nature and sometimes I’m a photoreporter at the events that I feel importants. Since a little while I’ve also decided to travel in Brandenbu

rg, made of a lot fo small towns where you can still find traces of the medieval age as well as of the relationship between germans and russians till ‘94. The blog rotates around photography, which is my job (http://www.norte.it), and it’s a way to incentivize to explore Berlin where the History is everywhere, near and touchable, not made by old memories, but by events that have influenced contemporary Europe and our personal lives (the images of the Berlin Wall falling are my first clear television memory). A city where the separation between east-west is carved in the buildings and it is still possible to find the marks, if you’re inclined to explore. Berlin is alredy reborn more then once in the last century and its buildings follow perfectly this layering. The example that I love to do is the Soho House in Torstrasse - we pass through it every day but nobody knows its history. In the beginning it was the Kaufhaus Jonaß froma jewish family befor the n**i time, then it has been confiscated and paneled with swastikas to be used for the Hi**erjugend (Hi**er Youth), after the wall standed out a huge Stalin’s portrait, it became SPD headquarter, then Institute for Marxism-Leninism of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. This is Berlin. But it is also a city with a lot of parks, markets, of modern buildings and hard choices and the fight for surviving of housing models built from below, the fight for gentrification and the break-up of the city to transform it in a ordinary european city, which is happening really fast. Unfortunately we can not save everything, not everything will remain as is because Berlin is not a museum-city, but clearly for us watching back at the past every demolished building is a blow to the heart (one of the most painful image is the video of the Anhalter Bahnhof demolition which you can watch in Berlin Babylon documentary film), as well as are the random devastations which have pulverized wonderful places in the years, places where we go to save with photography which is crumbling and which is risking to desappear from the collective memory.

As i am updating the website to a more useful and user friendly interface, i am also focusing more on the visual narrative of the posts, highlighting photos and editing them in a different way.
There were almost 400 posts in Elephant in Berlin with 750.000+ visits in the last 10 years, a lot of broken links that will need to be fixed, rebuilding of maps and the possibility to have a nice design on portable devices. Enjoy!

this blog has been silent for quite a lot, i was busy with Deutschland Übergestern and work.
I am updating the blog to a new environment, as the old one was not working, some links were broken and was not adaptive for phones.
Stay tuned !! ;)

In November 2011, I first visited the Gedenkstätte Berlin-Hohenschönhausen, what we call the Stasi Prison of Berlin, with my friend Alex. My German was really poor, but I decided to have the tour with a witness in German anyway, because sometimes understanding the language is less important than interacting with the situation. What I remember of that visit were the faces of the Germans in the group, all looking at the ground while the witness was sharing with us what he had to suffer there. (2011)

Anhalter Bahnhof was closed for traffic in 1952, when the GDR-owned Deutsche Reichsbahn rerouted all railway traffic between Berlin and places in the GDR avoiding the West Berlin area. Südgelände rails section was closed, abandoned in 1989, then become a 18 hectare park, known for its mix of wild nature, decaying railway facilities and art.

Discussions about historical legacies and homage to political persons of contemporary history are recurrent, the Ernst Thälmann monument in Greifswalder (Berlin) is rarely so clean.

All German radio programs broadcast in Berlin initially appeared in the Haus der Rundfunk in Masurenallee, but with the division of the city, the East needed a new radio station, which found its place as Funkhaus Nalepastrasse in Oberschöneweide. The last broadcast ended on midnight of 31th December 1991. Today, radio production no longer takes place there, but the recording halls are still in high demand because they combine acoustics and design in a unique way. (2012)

The monumental socialist boulevard, Stalinallee, was built in the 50’s as flagship building project of East Germany's reconstruction programme after World War Two. Workers, among them many women (Trümmerfrauen), and people from all around Europe were called to help build this new vision of palaces for the working class. But on June 17, 1953 it was also the focus of a worker uprising which endangered the young state's existence. Builders and construction workers protested against the communist government, leading to a national uprising. The rebellion was quashed with Soviet tanks and troops, resulting in the loss of at least 125 lives. In the same year, to commemorate the event, West Berlin renamed Charlottenburger Chaussee street in Straße des 17. Juni. (2013)

Juni umbenannt. (2013)
