Palestine Unsettled

Palestine Unsettled Palestine UNSETTLED is an award-winning photographic project by Steve Sabella. In this sense, Sabella liberates the image of Palestine held hostage.

Drawn from everyday life in Palestine beyond headlines.
30% of profits support medical aid in Gaza (Medico International). Palestine UNSETTLED | Winner of the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture - AFAC

Palestine UNSETTLED is a mesmerizing photo book journey to Palestine. Exhibited within its space are 130 unique images taken in Palestine during the Second Intifada (2000-2007), making them a historical

record. As a native Jerusalemite who lived under occupation for thirty-two years, Sabella sees the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians as a conflict of images where Israel holds the upper hand because of its resources of image formation, control, and circulation. With this mission, the journey of Palestine UNSETTLED ends with a leap of faith. Steve Sabella (*1975 born in Jerusalem, Palestine), is a Berlin-based international artist using photography and photographic installations as his primary forms of expression. His research focuses on the genealogy and archaeology of the image. He is the author of the award-winning memoir, The Parachute Paradox, published by Kerber Verlag (Berlin, 2016) tackling the colonization of the imagination. The book won the 2017 Eric Hoffer Award and the 2016 Nautilus Book Awards for best memoir. In 2008, Sabella received the Ellen Auerbach Award by nomination from the Akademie der Künste in Berlin, leading to a monograph covering twenty years of his art published by Hatje Cantz (Berlin, 2014) with texts by Hubertus von Amelunxen, president of the European Graduate School in Switzerland, and a foreword by artist and art historian Kamal Boullata who described Sabella’s work as a dream to discover. Sabella’s art is in the British Museum collection in London. MATHAF, The Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, where he was one of the 23 artists commissioned for its inauguration in 2010. The Arab World Institute in Paris, which has twenty artworks in their permanent collection. Bahrain National Museum upon a commission to interpret the country visually. Ars Aevi Museum of Contemporary Art in Sarajevo. Salsali Private Museum in Dubai, among other museums & prominent private collections. https://stevesabella.space/pages/palestine-unsettled

This image has stayed with me for years: light, dust, laughter, defiance.
A reminder that spirit moves where logic says it shouldn’t.

My interview with DW Culture And here we are almost a year later, and neither the war has ended, the killing stopped, nor the Occupation has ended.

Till when? All this will end when we all realize that every human being wants the same in life: to live in freedom. Caring for others will make the others care for us.

The cultural scene is split over the "right" response to the October 7, 2023 terrorist attacks on Israel and the Gaza War. Cultural events continue to be canceled; Jewish and Palestinian artists alike feel stigmatized. How can understanding prevail?

This month marks the anniversary of the passing of the great artist Kamal Boullata, born in Jerusalem, Palestine, whose art transcends all borders. Watch this special 1985 film, marking Kamal's first visit after being forced to live in exile after the 1967 war. Watch to understand a bit the roots of what is happening in this troubled land.

May Kamal's soul find its peace, and may Palestine and Palestinians find their just liberation.

This is what I wrote about Kamal's art and life in my memoir The Parachute Paradox:
..
"Kamal was an expert on the literature of the soul, on the language of life. Every conversation with him was about essence, about true being. As for his art, his visuals are mirrors of pure light, transparent like the soul. Kaleidoscopic. Always changing. They capture your vision upon first glance, and the deeper one looks, the closer one reaches a central point, one that resides in the self. And once there, it becomes inevitable to see Kamal’s clairvoyant colors float in an endless rhythmic dance.

Kamal inspired many in his life, and I feel his journey has just begun. His departure is not a loss but a reward to all humanity. They forced him to leave Palestine, but Palestine never left him. And Jerusalem was always at the center of Kamal’s heart. Seeing how he lived his life, he was one of my beliefs that to be born in Jerusalem, or anywhere else, means one is always becoming a citizen of planet Earth."
