Those Who Do

Those Who Do A photo project highlighting incredible individuals, to raise aid and funds for Ukraine. We all have the ability to rise above and help.

Those Who Do is a photo project from photographers Wesley Mayer and Alexandra Pavlenko to highlight and bring aid to those who took on responsibility in a time of need, particularly during the invasion of Ukraine. We are a collective of photographers who aim to bring stories of people who stood up in the face of hardship, cared for others, and took action. We hope that through these stories and ph

otos of individuals and their causes, we can raise aid money and awareness for the many people who need it in this difficult time. You can help those who do, or be one of them. We encourage you to support one of the GoFundMe sites attached to this project, we are raising funds to support the individuals highlighted in these stories, and the running costs of the project itself. We are incredibly thankful for your continued support.

On April 12, 2022, the pipeline bringing water to Mykolaiv from the Dnieper River was damaged by russian artillery. This left the city without drinking water for around 20 days. Marina’s husband was an officer in a unit fighting on the front lines between Mykolaiv and Kherson. She was volunteering for a donation center that had plenty of bottled water, what they lacked was gas money to drive the trucks back and forth. She reached out through her networks asking people to sponsor trucks full of water. In addition to providing assistance, it would also give her a chance to see him.

She joined us on a trip she had organized to bring cases of bottled water to her husband’s unit. After the delivery, which included an Easter cake she had baked at home, her husband took us out to a recent battle site. It was a Russian position that had recently been routed. As we walked around the trenches and fields of exploded vehicles, Marina found the used case of Russian army meal. The pride in her husband, pride in her country’s military, and disgust for the Russian army mixed together on her face with as she lifted it in the air with Ukrainian flag painted fingernails.

War fighting is a crazy place for the human mind to have to go to. The mindset needed to embrace the darkness in a way that lets you remain alive and effective in combat is an altogether different mindset than one you would like to have when, say, eating an Easter cake your wife baked you. Marina’s husband was the officer in charge of the unit we visited that day. The embrace they shared upon seeing each other was deep, but one could feel the walls he had built to protect himself from stepping too far out of his armor. As his men ate pieces of cake he sat in with a few others in a corner going over drone footage of nearby Russian troops. On our walk through the old battlefield he occasionally held his wife’s hand, trying his best to be present.

The organization Mriya Vilnyh Liudey was founded only this year to support refugees and the war effort. Displaced families and children sleep in makeshift bomb shelters like this for safety from Russian rockets.

This is a sad necessity for so many affected by this war. Mriya Vilnyh Liudey works hard to bring as much relief as they can, you can directly support them here: https://www.mriya.od.ua/en/about-us/

In Mykolaiv, a city on the front lines in the south of Ukraine, Mikhail works hard to keep his fellow soldiers safe. He volunteered for the army in 2014 after the first Russian invasion, and when the war broke out he had to return to full-time duty. “We are standing strong because we know what we’re doing it for. They cannot take that away and neither they can defeat it.”

Mikhail and his fellow soldiers won’t stop defending their country until it’s safe from Russian aggression. If you want to help them, check out the following links for ways to directly support.
