The following post contains and regards the topic of National-Socialism, Fascism and their personal dimension for me.
In 2018 I started to research and archive the role of my grandparents during the Third Reich and after. Let me be clear right away: they were N***s. They are guilty by moral, ethical and social affiliation and participation in the fascist dictatorship and its deeds. No heroes here, nothing we today would see as a force of good in the world.
In my family this has never been something extraordinary, in fact it was just as it was. To me, this was the history of us all, every German was a part of it and involved. The collective myth of our grandparents and relatives being "secret resistors" or "not having known about anything" and all the other comfortable lies held to be true for too long, are what motivated me to dig into this. This and the fact that a considerable stack of documents, a few pictures and the like, remained after my grandmother died.
The material you're seeing in these pictures are of my grandfather's ownership. Why post this today?
It would be his 100th birthday as the prisoner of war release form (the one over stamped with the big over red SS runes) indicates. I'm the second generation after him. I never met him. I am uncertain whether or not I wanted to. There are many questions, and many I could answer thanks to archives and research. Hence I've taken this on as a personal project. They were nothing special in the fascist system. They were the average well- intended yet convinced supporters and perpetrators of the system. We must be aware of their way from the last glimpses of the Weimar Republic, fully growing up and living in the National- Socialist system as well as their lives after 1945- now more than ever.
