The search to find an entry level job or internship in the creative industry in London, that pays enough for you to remain living in the city, is incredibly difficult. Not only that, but it is also hard as a freelancer to explain why we cannot lower our prices for the job, or do the work for free. Unfortunately exposure won't pay the bills.
I found a pledge this morning created by the Young Creative Council, entitled 'Placement Poverty Pledge' and on the page there is a list of companies who recognise that they are paying their placement workers too little and as of January this year, they vowed that they would pay all their interns the current living wage.
'there is enough stress put on them to prove their creative worth without the additional stress of struggling to survive'.
It is amazing that so many companies are now recognising this issue, and that there a programmes out there such as the Young Creative Council dedicated to helping and supporting young talent in the creative industries. It's a start and hopefully this issue will continue to be resolved as time goes on, and as the creative industry grows.
People who do, change the world. Everyone else is just living here.
