It's been more than a year since my last post here, so I figured I'd get the post for 2020 out of the way now. ;) I've posted the first part of my project documenting the GDR 30 years after its dissolution. I have a few more rolls to develop before I can "wrap" on Berlin. This month I'll travel to other cities in eastern Germany and start to work on the remaining 40 rolls of 1990 expired film I have left.

expireDDR, part oneWhen the German Democratic Republic (DDR) dissolved in 1990, it left behind a complicated legacy forged on the front lines of socialism and a divided Europe. It took less than one year from the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 for two Germanys to become one. The suddenness of reuni...

Writing this one was a real treat. I can't remember the last time I wrote about the Civil War, but I think it was while wearing a Union uniform.

We explore Mathew Brady's Civil War photography.

Today's the first day of my East German project. This is everything I'll carry for the entire project. A Kiev 60 camera with 80mm lens, Sekonic light meter, lens hood, shutter cord, orange filter, 120mm film and carrying case, tripod and camera bag. Not pictured; much more film.

Hansaviertel is Berlins smallest district, but it still managed to feel rural when I stumbled into this area on the edge of the Tiergarten. The algae making the water look green was really cool. A great time to have black and white film loaded!

If anyone's guilty of over-re-designing their website, it's been me. I've never felt satisfied with my results or the platforms I've used. But after doing some research and seeing the websites of photographers I really like, I think my work finally has a HOME-home. Check it out and let me know what you think!

Here on Bornholmer Straße was the scene of the first crossings of the East/West Berlin border in 1989. There's still a good chunk of the wall, including a section with a big "Memphis TN" on it. It was the perfect day to shoot some gritty black and white film.

I'm halfway through shooting my stash of Lomography Berlin Kino film, and I find myself waiting for the light by the Brandenburg Gate. I've done this shot before, but this time I get to enjoy it with below freezing temperatures. I don't slow down the process and sit and wait for good light nearly often enough.

Roll one of sixty completed! Next week I'll start my project documenting East Germany on film that expired in 1990. Since the film is thirty years old, I shot a test roll trying out different exposures to see how it likes to be shot. Even though its 400 speed film, the aging process and winter light means I'll be getting a lot of use out of my tripod and cable release.
