Der EMOP Berlin - European Month of Photography ist das größte deutsche Fotofestival. Seit 2004 findet es alle zwei Jahre in Berlin statt und präsentiert zahlreiche Ausstellungen und Veranstaltungen zu historischer und zeitgenössischer Fotografie. Veranstalter ist die Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH in Zusammenarbeit mit Museen, Kulturinstitutionen, Galerien, Botschaften, Projekträumen und Fotoschulen in Berlin und Potsdam. Der EMOP Berlin ist Mitglied des European Month of Photography (EMOP), eines europäischen Gemeinschaftsprojekts, dem auch die Fotofestivals in Bratislava, Budapest, Ljubljana, Luxemburg, Paris und Wien angehören. Bereits 2003 entstand auf Initiative der Berliner Partnerstadt Paris die Idee, ein europäisches Netzwerk von Fotofestivals ins Leben zu rufen. Der Kooperation von Berlin, Paris und Wien folgten schon 2006 die Hauptstädte Bratislava, Luxemburg, Moskau und Rom. 2012 wurde der Kreis um Budapest und Ljubljana erweitert. 2014 trat Athen dem europäischen Netzwerk bei.

To mark the 200th anniversary of photography, the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises is presenting the EMOP Gallery Concept Award 2026/27 to 10 Berlin galleries for outstanding exhibition concepts focusing on contemporary artistic photography. The aim of the prize is to strengthen the international visibility of photography in Berlin and to recognise the commitment of galleries that consistently promote the medium in their programmes. The prize money totals 100,000 euros.

The selected exhibition concepts will be realised as part of EMOP Berlin – European Month of Photography 2027, while the awards will be presented during Paris Photo in November 2026.

Berlin galleries, this is your moment!

To mark the 200th anniversary of photography, the Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Public Enterprises (Senatsverwaltung für Wirtschaft, Energie & Betriebe) is launching the EMOP Gallery Concept Award 2026/27.

The award invites commercial galleries based in Berlin with a strong commitment to contemporary artistic photography to submit innovative exhibition concepts.

10 galleries will receive funding with a total prize fund of 100,000 euros, with the top three galleries receiving 25,000, 18,000 and 15,000 euros respectively and 6,000 euros each for the galleries ranked fourth to tenth.

A jury will select the most compelling entries. It consists of Florian Ebner, Head of the Photography Collection at the Centre Pompidou (Centre Pompidou), Paris; Nela Eggenberger (Nela Eggenberger), Founding Editor of the magazine P.IN.E.A Periodical, Vienna (P.IN.E.A), and Maren Lübbke-Tidow (.luebbke), Artistic Director, EMOP Berlin.

The selected exhibition concepts will be realised as part of EMOP Berlin – European Month of Photography 2027, while the awards will be presented during Paris Photo in November 2026.

Applications are open until 28 August 2026.

Become a part of the 12th EMOP Berlin 2027! 📸

Until August 16, we invite museums, exhibition venues, municipal and private galleries, project spaces, and art academies to submit both open-themed exhibitions and leitmotif-related projects scheduled for the festival month. The focus is on photographic works that explore Europe as a shared and fragile space of experience constantly calling for renegotiation: in ways that are critical, contradictory, documentary, and poetic. Each participating exhibition related to the guiding theme can be viewed as a visual missive — a contribution to the question of how a common European space becomes visible, conceivable, and shapeable today.

With the guiding theme Common Ground. Letters from Europe, EMOP Berlin kicks off preparations for its 12th festival edition, which will take place from 4 MAR—4 APR 2027. Europe is less solid ground than a shared question. Common Ground inquires into what we share, what we lose, what we assert, and what we need to renegotiate. To this purpose, Letters from Europe employs the epistolary form: personal, polyphonic, and open-ended. EMOP Berlin 2027 is an invitation to participate in creating a shared European space through images.

Hooray! We're back on track! 🥳 EMOP Berlin will take place from 4 MAR—4 APR 2027 for its 12th edition! Under the leitmotif Common Ground. Letters from Europe, the photo festival once again puts Berlin on the national and international map as a city of photography. You can look forward to exhibitions and events in museums, cultural institutions, galleries, project spaces, archives and (art) universities.
