February, 2025. Bangkok, Thailand. Within the Ubosot, or ordination hall, of Wat Arun Ratchawararam in Bangkok, resides the revered Niramitr Buddha image. This principal Buddha statue is depicted in a sitting posture, specifically the “Subduing Mara” mudra, symbolizing the moment of the Buddha’s enlightenment when he overcame temptations. The image was cast during the reign of King Rama II (1809-1824), who is said to have personally sculpted the mold for its face. Notably, the base of this golden Buddha image enshrines some of King Rama II’s ashes, adding to its profound spiritual and historical significance within this iconic “Temple of Dawn.” The surrounding murals within the Ubosot further narrate the life of the Buddha, creating a sacred space for contemplation and devotion.

February 2025. Bangkok, Thailand. The Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho represents the Buddha entering Nirvana, the final state of peace and freedom from suffering. This pose, known as sihasaiyas or the sleeping lion, depicts the Buddha just before his passing. The statue, built in 1832 by King Rama III, is 46 meters long and 15 meters high, and its eyes and the soles of its feet are exquisitely inlaid with mother-of-pearl, featuring 108 auspicious symbols that signify the Buddha’s characteristics.
