Wing scales of the Green Forester moth, Adscita statices.
Each scale is a slender tile of chitin, striped along its length like a miniature corrugated roof. In dry air those ridges and the porous multilayer beneath them interfere with light and return a metallic green that can lean toward teal or gold. The colour is structural, not painted on. Inside the scale lumen sits an unusual hydrophilic stack of melanized chitin and air. When humidity rises, water vapour enters the pores, the refractive-index contrast of the stack changes, and the reflectance peak slides from about 550 nanometres toward the red. Dry wings look leaf-green by day. At dusk or dawn, or after rain, the same moth can turn rusty, copper or dull brown. Wet a single scale and the shift is visible under the microscope; let it dry and the green returns.
That reversible hygrochromism is rare among Lepidoptera. Most butterfly and moth scales are water-repellent. These are not. The moth lives on damp meadows as well as drier banks, so the same individual can wear two costumes in one day.
