If you plan to visit Weltvogelpark Walsrode at the moment, keep in mind that they seem to have started some kind of repair/renovation work on the leaking ceiling in Pukara.

I’m not sure if they’re just doing temporary repairs with beams to keep the rotten ceiling up, or if they’re planning to renovate the entire ceiling again. Yes, again. They already did the ceiling a few years ago 😅

As of my visit today, several rare species could not be seen because of the work, including the quetzals.
So I thought I’d make a post about it to let people know, since the park themselves never seem to let people know about things like this online 🙄😂

Weltvogelpark Walsrode now officially has a new curator, Heiko Janatzek! I heard about it some time ago, but it’s now also publicly confirmed in this article about Tiergarten Nürnbergs harpy breeding, so I can finally share it here as well!

A warm welcome to Heiko as the new curator at Walsrode! I hope everyone will give him a fair chance and a warm welcome as he starts this new role. Wishing him all the best in his new position! 😊

Weltvogelpark Walsrode now finally has a pair of harpy eagles! Well, the male has actually been behind the scenes for some time, so I haven’t published anything about him before, but now they are both visible in the park, so now I can finally post about the new male! Right now, they are kept in two separate smaller holding aviaries, waiting to eventually be put together, I assume! ;)

At the moment, I have no information about where the male came from or how old he is.

Time for another former species from Weltvogelpark Walsrode, this time the very rare Green-tailed Trainbearer (Lesbia nuna), and of course the hummingbird house, which is also a former part of the park since it was revamped into the nocturnal Nachtwelten some years ago.

The Green-tailed Trainbearer has historically only been kept in seven public collections worldwide, according to Zootierliste, with the most recent being Weltvogelpark Walsrode, which kept the species from 2010 until 2020/2021.

Another former species from Weltvogelpark Walsrode in Germany! This is an Andean aplomado falcon (Falco femoralis pichinchae). It came from Vogelpark Olching and lived at Weltvogelpark Walsrode from 2024 until 2026.

Such a nice-looking bird! 🥰

I haven't done any "former species at Weltvogelpark Walsrode" posts for like two days now, so let's do 3 former species in this post!

In 2021, Weltvogelpark Walsrode received 5 different species of manakins. This was pretty extraordinary, and I know that people travelled quite far to see them! Today, they only have two of these 5 species left, and only a male of each species: White-bearded manakin (Manacus manacus manacus) and Golden-headed manakin (Ceratopipra erythrocephala).

The species that they no longer keep from this "batch" are the Blue-backed manakin (Chiroxiphia pareola), Crimson-hooded manakin (Pipra aureola) and White-crowned manakin (Pseudopipra pipra).

Another former species from Weltvogelpark Walsrode, this time one that left relatively recently: Crimson Topaz (Topaza pella pella).

Walsrode received 3.4 of this species back in 2022, but at most I saw two pairs on show. Towards the end of their time at Walsrode, there were just two females left, with one of them being on show in the Pukara building for a little bit.

I know many people travelled quite far to see this species here at WVP Walsrode, and I also know that many people are sad to have missed it.
According to Zootierliste, the species is not currently kept in any public collection worldwide.
