This picture represents April of my WILD 2026 calendar. At first glance, this moment almost looks playful, four horses kicking or rearing, frozen in a chaotic moment. But there is nothing light about what is happening here.
On the left is a young mare who had given birth less than an hour before this picture was taken. Her foal is brand new to the world, fragile, unsteady, still learning to stand. This should be a time of quiet bonding, of first breaths and first steps.
Instead, there is chaos. One of the three stallions to her right is her own, fighting to protect her, while the others are drawn in. In the wild, mares enter “foal heat” shortly after giving birth, and that instinct pulls stallions in, even at the worst possible moment.
What you are seeing is not just power. It is tension, instinct, survival. A mother defending her space. A stallion defending her. A newborn’s first hour unfolding in chaos instead of calm.
The wild doesn’t wait for the right moment. Sometimes, it is breathtaking and brutal at the same time.

I feel incredibly blessed to have witnessed this unforgettable moment alongside amazing people and . While .lubetzki missed this particular scene, he was out there creating unforgettable memories of his own
