Tribute to the LH A340-600! Turns out I don’t have that many photos of it 😳😳😳

It’s an opportunity wasted (many opportunities wasted in that case), but I am grateful for what I have. The „Galeere“ (galley in German in reference to the long ships) has been a steady workhorse in the Lufthansa long-haul fleet and has been service much longer than anticipated! Many times there were talks about this aircraft being retired, but now it is finally happening.

The A340-600 is a special aircraft and was at one stage the world‘s longest commercial jet (the title is currently held by the B747-8 and will transfer to the new 777 once it arrives). It has been used all across the Lufthansa network and will surely missed by enthusiasts and aviation fans around the world!

Farewell!

Unique footage from the cockpit of one of the last passengers 747-400s in the sky!

I am flying her to Frankfurt‘s southern runway 07R in this video on an usually beautiful and calm day - the only thing that disturbed my landing was the wake turbulence of an A340-600 that hit us in 10 feet above the ground, but it still worked out nicely in the end with a smooth touchdown 😅 puuuhhh…

What is your favourite “Queen of the Skies” moment? Take-off or landing?

A special approach - event for a pilot! Automatic landing in low visibility conditions are very rare!

While we train for this in the simulator every year, I can count the low visibility approaches I have done in my career on one hand!

On this approach the copilot might be the most important team member. He scans the instruments for any deviation, abnormalities or unusual indications and has to call them out immediately. Depending on the actual height and flight phase, the captain has to make a split-second decision to continue or go-around. And all that with no outside visibility and only metres above the ground!

This CAT IIIb approaches requires NO decision height - the pilots may only see the runway lights when they have landed…

This is not a video game, this is real! Could you land that plane?

Here is what it looks like to land the rare Boeing 747-8 passenger jet at one of the biggest airports in the world with some gusty winds. It’s no easy task to keep the Queen of the Skies stable - it’s normal for Boeing aircraft of that generation to use a lot of control wheel input even for small corrections! ✈️

Last minute of flight LH754 - uncut and raw flight deck view from one of the last Boeing 747-400 passenger aircraft in the world!

The 747 is also called the Queen of the Skies and used to be dominant long-haul aircraft for decades! Now her days are coming to an end, but German airline Lufthansa is still flying some to destinations such as Bengaluru in India! With retirement planned for 2027, this video gives a rare glimpse of what it looks like to fly in this legendary aircraft!
