To celebrate the end of Carnival, I’m sharing some shots from my long term project”Behind the mask”.
After Italy and Slovenia, the next stop will be Austria. Over the year, I’ll visit other sculptors’ workshops to learn about their traditions and techniques. Once complete, the project will be presented at a large exhibition during the upcoming carnivals. More info soon.

While Carnival is in full swing, I’ll share a few more photos from my long term project “Behind the masks”.

In the heart of the Friulian valleys and beyond the border, in the enchanting Slovenian territory, lies a magical and vibrant world, rich in tradition, creativity, and deep connection with the land: that of the carnival mask carvers. Through this photographic project, I aim to narrate this fascinating story behind the scenes, revealing the importance and value of the mask carvers’ work, keepers of an ancient tradition that renews itself every year with a fresh vitality, and that in my view embodies the very essence of human culture and creativity.

In the cultural fabric of the area on the border between Italy and Slovenia, carnival masks represent much more than simple festive ornaments; they are bearers of deep meanings and symbols rooted in the history and life of local communities. The Friulian and Slovenian carnival traditions, although sharing common roots, stand out for their unique nuances and peculiarities. From ancestral rituals to elaborate costumes, every detail tells a story, a worldview, and a heritage that the mask-carvers contribute to preserving and passing on. Yet, beyond these diversities, there is an invisible thread that unites the two shores, the suggestion of a border finally fallen, opening the doors to greater understanding and mutual collaboration.

In this context of renewed dialogue, mask carvers become cultural ambassadors, promoters of exchanges and encounters that transcend geographical and linguistic barriers. Through symposia and workshops, community meetings, and the magic of artistic creation, solid bonds are woven that celebrate diversity and foster mutual growth.
This project goes beyond the mere documentation of a centuries-old tradition. It fits into a historical context of reconsideration of the concept of “development,” embracing a new awareness of the necessary respect for the environment and the roots that sustain us. The masks, carved in wood, remind us of the fragility and beauty of the nature that surrounds us, inviting us to a profound reflection on our relationship with the world and the time we inhabit.

A while ago, I visited the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics with my friend
We wanted to see te famous Wendelstein with our own eyes, so we booked a guided tour.
Wendelstein 7X is a Stellarator, or nuclear fusion reactor, built in Greifswald (Germany) by ‘s team of physicists and engineers.
The result of an unprecedented international collaboration, this incredible machine has the potential to revolutionize human history by producing clean, virtually unlimited energy. Beyond the technical wonder of the machinery, what strikes me personally is the intrinsic beauty of this tangle of cables, magnets, computers, scaffolding…seemingly so chaotic and precarious but capable of things that were science fiction until recently.
I always find mind-blowing that humankind, as a whole, is capable of such noble and magnificent achievements, yet at the same time (mainly because of a few crazy individuals in power) is still responsible for the worst atrocities against the planet and the creatures that live on it, and purely out of greed. It’s something I will never understand.
Anyway…..to my surprise, photography was allowed, and despite not having my flash with me and the short duration of the tour, I managed to take a few shots on the fly. I felt like a kid in a candy store, and in the end, they literally had to kick me out. If it had been up to me, I would have stayed forever.

I’m thrilled to see part of my ongoing project about the Mutoid Waste Company in the latest issue of
It’s a story about a legendary art collective founded in England by in the early eighties. Responsible for the birth of the first rave parties, their art and performances had a huge influence on the European underground scene. Their installations often feature massive sculptures, cyberpunk robots and Mad Max-inspired vehicles, crafted from scrap metal and plastic, transforming industrial debris into visually striking pieces that challenge societal norms, emphasize themes of environmentalism, and strongly criticize war and consumerism.
Special thanks to for your thrust and support.
