Ideas, not rules. Same parking deck, one evening, three very different shots.

1. From above, over the wall
2. Into whatever light you get
3. Low, with the doors up (yes, the MX-5 has lambo doors)

Next time you’re on a deck, try at least one angle you’d normally skip.

Not every shot in a set has to be the hero shot.

While shooting I thought this one was just B-roll. Not the most beautiful angle, but interesting, and it adds something to the set.

Then I edited it and honestly, it’s a shot.

Do you keep your „boring“ shots or delete them right away?

Send this to the friend who keeps saying it.

No you won’t. Nobody gets handed free evenings. I’ve had a full-time job the whole time and still do.

If photography is your hobby and you love it that way, keep it that way. This is for everyone who wants to get paid for it.

Time isn’t what’s missing. These 3 things are:

1. Getting known. Nobody books a photographer they’ve never heard of. I barely reached out to anyone myself for years. Don’t be me.
2. A portfolio. Show the work you want to get paid for, not everything you’ve ever shot.
3. Showing up. I posted twice a month for a while and almost sold my camera over it. Now I post every day.

The real ones were right there. A whole flock circling over the parking deck while I was setting up the MX-5. I begged. They flew the other way. And the second I wasn’t ready, they were back.

So the sky got a little help in the edit.

Everything else is real: the spot, the lambo doors and the sun breaking through right at the end.

Where do you draw the line? Sky swap, a few birds, a whole new background? Edit or cheat? 👀

Sent my quote. Read 14:02. Then nothing.

Followed up once. Read again. Somewhere around week two I started thinking about a cheaper version. Never sent it.

Weeks later they wrote back. Same quote.

Silence after your price feels like a no. Sometimes it’s just life getting in the way.

Ever dropped your price because nobody answered? Yes or no.

No shoot planned. Just my daily and a spot I’ve been wanting to check out for ages.

Of course I showed up a little late and pretty much missed the sunset. So I caught the last bit of that glowing red light (last slide) and headed one level down into the parking garage.

Didn’t take long to notice the mood down there could actually work. So a quick location check turned into a small set 😅

For me that’s the important part: picking up the camera even when no shoot is planned. There’s always something to do. Testing a spot, trying a look, or in this case location scouting that got a little out of hand.

Rooftop or garage, which one would you have stayed for? 👀

Back then nobody asked if it was cringe.
We posted 65 photos of a dark club. Red eyes, half of them blurry, everyone tagged. Zero hesitation.

Now we get one shot we actually like and let it rot in a folder. Too much? Not sharp enough? What will people think?

14 years in, I still post shots I’m not 100% happy with. Nobody’s grading them. The algorithm doesn’t even know if they’re in focus. You only find out what works by putting it out there.

Post the one you keep second-guessing.
