The Wadden Sea in northern Germany is the largest mudflat in the world. The special characteristics of the ecosystem lead to the colonization with many specialists among the animals and plants, which are able to adapt to the extreme living conditions in the tidal flats. Every year, several million water and wading birds rest and live here, most of which have their breeding grounds in the subarctic and arctic regions. For longer periods in the annual cycle, these birds depend on the mudflats as a habitat.
For seals and many fishes, the Wadden Sea is especially indispensable as a „children’s room“.

Bark beetles in spruce forests.
These beetles are particularly promoted by climate change, as warm and dry summers additionally weaken the trees and make them more attractive for the beetles. While warm winters favor the survival of larvae and young beetles in the bark and soil, they also favor the beetles‘ enemies, such as predatory insects or insect-pathogenic fungi. The extreme weather events associated with climate change, such as storms, hail, sunburn, etc., also favor bark beetle populations by increasing breeding material.

Curious, little fox? 🦊
This is the first acceptable result of my camera trap mission ;) I’ve been experimenting with it for almost a year now and I really think it opens up new ways of capturing animal behavior.

Today, crows, ravens, magpies, jackdaws and jays are still considered „bad luck messengers“. Also the phrase of the thieving magpies became common. However, the negative image of the black birds is completely misplaced in many respects. Ravens are considered smart animals that use intelligent methods to find food. For example, they open nuts by dropping them onto the concrete from a considerable height.

If the greylag goose spots a stroller, you can hear how one goose warns the whole group, and then you are watched skeptically by all the others. A very amusing act. Which one is your favorite?

Whoever follows the white rabbit will see the wonderland of truth in a different light. To be honest, the hare watching you here isn’t white and I haven’t been able to follow him down his rabbit hole either.
