🏘️ Stolberg is a historic town in the Harz Mountains of central Germany, first mentioned in written records in 1252. Its old town is famous for its hundreds of colourful half-timbered houses, many dating from the 16th to 19th centuries. Their wooden frames and traditional designs give the town the appearance of a place almost untouched by time.

🏰 Rising above the town, Stolberg Castle was the seat of the Counts and later Princes of Stolberg for centuries. Originally a medieval fortress, it was gradually transformed into a more comfortable residence as the family’s wealth and tastes changed. The castle reflects the power of the noble families who once controlled this part of Germany.

⛏️ Stolberg’s history was closely connected to mining in the surrounding Harz Mountains, where mineral resources supported local trade and metalworking. This economic activity helped the town develop, while its narrow streets and tightly grouped houses grew naturally within the steep, wooded valleys.

🏰 Built in the 17th century, the Radziwiłł Palace in Biała Podlaska was the residence of one of the most powerful noble families in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, a large state that once united Poland and Lithuania. The palace was the heart of the complex, but the most important building no longer exists today. After the family’s fortunes declined in the 19th century, the palace was dismantled for its building materials.

🏛️ The grand Baroque entrance gate was much more than a simple entrance. Designed to resemble an ancient Roman triumphal arch, it welcomed guests while displaying the family’s wealth, status and military prestige. The adjoining historic tower, dating from the early 17th century, formed part of the fortified entrance and remains one of the complex’s most recognisable features.

🌳 The palace once stood at the centre of a large estate with courtyards, gardens and additional buildings that supported the life of a great aristocratic household. Although the main residence has vanished, the surviving gate, tower, chapel and remains of the palace foundations help visitors imagine the scale and grandeur of the former complex.

🧩 Today, the site is a reminder of the Radziwiłł family’s influence and the aristocratic heritage of eastern Poland.

🏰 Founded around 1200, Burg Gnandstein is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Saxony, eastern Germany. Built on a rocky outcrop above the Wyhra River valley, it served as both a defensive stronghold and a symbol of noble power.

🪨 The castle is especially notable for its Romanesque architecture, a medieval style characterised by thick stone walls, rounded arches and solid structures. Its oldest buildings show how castles were designed to provide protection while also serving as residences.

👑 The von Einsiedel family owned the estate for about five centuries, shaping the castle and the surrounding lands over generations. By the 16th century, their influence extended across dozens of villages, making Gnandstein an important centre of local authority and wealth.

📜 More than a fortress, Burg Gnandstein was the heart of a large estate, where noble power was expressed through landownership and control over the surrounding communities. Today, the castle offers a glimpse into medieval life and the long history of Saxony.

🏰 The palace was the third royal residence in Kozienice. Stanisław August Poniatowski, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania from 1764, commissioned a new stone palace after the First Partition of Poland in 1772 as a retreat and hunting residence.

🌳 The palace was designed as part of the town itself, with a long axis leading toward the residence and a formal Baroque park, later partly transformed into a more natural landscape garden.

🏛️ The complex acquired its present French-inspired appearance after a major reconstruction at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1939, German troops set the palace and its right wing on fire. The main palace was never rebuilt; the only surviving reminder of the early-20th-century appearance is the restored left wing. An administrative building was erected on the palace site in the 1960s, while the right wing was reconstructed in the 1990s.

✨ Today, the complex has undergone extensive and successful revitalisation, bringing the surviving buildings into greater architectural harmony and giving the site an attractive appearance. The restored ensemble helps visitors imagine the grandeur of the former royal residence.

📍 Pałac Stanisława Augusta Poniatowskiego, Kozienice

🏰 The history of Neschwitz goes back to the 13th century, when a moated castle stood here. In the 15th century it was transformed into a Renaissance residence, before being replaced by the present Baroque palace.

🏗️ The current palace was built between 1714 and 1721, with the design attributed to Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann, one of the leading architects of Baroque Saxony. In 1743, Heinrich von Brühl, one of the most powerful ministers at the Saxon court, bought the estate and transformed Neschwitz into an elegant summer residence in the Rococo style.

🌳 The palace was surrounded by an impressive Baroque garden, later enlarged with an English-style landscape park. This combination of formal gardens and natural-looking landscapes reflects changing tastes in European garden design.

🍊 The grounds also included a large orangery and an orange grove, reportedly containing around 100 trees. Exotic plants were a luxury in the 18th century and a clear symbol of the wealth and status of the court.
