The grave of the Paul Elsas couple at the Unterbarmen Cemetery in Wuppertal tells a moving story closely linked to Barmen’s industrial heyday and the tragedies of the First World War.
Biographical background of the couple: Paul Elsas (born February 8, 1885, in Wuppertal-Barmen) came from a wealthy family and worked as a manufacturer in Barmen, an industrial city that was flourishing at the time. Helene Elsas (née Molineus; born March 13, 1890) was the daughter of the influential *Geheimer Kommerzienrat* (Privy Councillor of Commerce) Albert Molineus, whose family was firmly established within Wuppertal’s business elite. The couple married on May 31, 1910, in Wuppertal-Barmen, sealing the union of two of the city’s respected civic families.
Their time together as a married couple was short-lived. Following the outbreak of the First World War, Paul Elsas deployed to the Western Front. He was killed in action during the early months of the war—on January 10, 1915, at the age of just 29—amidst heavy fighting in the Argonne region of France.

The little owl is one of Europe's best-known owls. This small owl belongs to the family of "typical owls" (Strigidae). It is widely distributed across Europe. Measuring approximately 22 cm, it is not even as large as the common blackbird. Male and female little owls look alike, though the female is slightly larger and heavier. With its distinctive call ("Huu-hu-huhuhuhuu"), the male signals to other members of its species that the territory is occupied. The female often responds with a sharp, piercing "Ku-witt!" (sounding like the German phrase "Komm mit!"—"Come with me!"). These calls serve to maintain contact with a mate in the dark.
In the past, the call of the tawny owl was often considered an evil omen or a harbinger of death (earning it the name "death bird"). Naturally, this superstition is completely unfounded from a scientific perspective. In the Middle Ages, these birds were often misunderstood or simply lured close to dying people by light sources that attracted moths and other nocturnal insects.

The castle Lüdinghausen is a water castle in Luedinghausen in the district Coesfeld.
The castle was built in the 12th century as the seat of the lords of Lüdinghausen and converted into a typical Renaissance castle under Gottfried von Raesfeld in the 16th century.
The 16th century also contains some of the interesting building details. A list of food prices from the years 1573/74, various coats of arms and an inscription on the town fires from 1573/74 can be found in the façade in 1569. The upper rooms of the castle combine building tradition with modern elements and are partly furnished as meeting rooms. The castle is today owned by the city of Lüdinghausen.

This owl was introduced to the public by a falconer at a farmer's market...I was allowed to photograph this wonderful creature.

The Southern White-faced Owl (Ptilopsis granti) is a fairly small owl from the Strigidae family.
