Similar to the maypole of Anglo traditions, the German Maibaum (May tree) is erected on May 1st or the day before. Residents in Bavaria, East Frisia in Lower Saxony, Baden-Württemberg and elsewhere celebrate this originally pagan ritual each year within their local communities.

The tree (or pole) is decorated with colourful streamers, flowers and in some places with scenes showing local crafts or activities.

Parades, brass band music and sausage-eating usually accompany the event of the actual raising of the tree. And don’t forget the special dark Maibock beer, brewed just for the occasion.

Mont Sainte-Odile (German: 'Odilienberg' or Ottilienberg) is a 764-metre-high peak in the Vosges Mountains in Alsace in France, immediately west of Barr. The mountain is named after Saint Odile. It has a monastery/convent at its top called the Hohenburg Abbey, and is notable also for its stone fortifications called "the Pagan Wall."

The mountain and its surroundings contain evidence of Celtic settlements. The mountain enters recorded history during the Roman times; a fortress was supposedly destroyed by the Vandals in 407. In the second half of the 9th century, when Vikings attacked the Low Countries, which had been recently converted to Christianity and were governed from Utrecht, the Utrecht bishops went into exile and stayed for a while in Mont Sainte-Odile. At least since the 19th century, its beauty has been celebrated and the mountain, with convent and pagan wall, is often included in tourist guides. The Pagan Wall (German: Heidenmauer, French: Mur païen) is a huge construction about 10 km long which encircles Mont Sainte Odile. It is composed of about 300,000 blocks, between 1.6 m and 1.8 m wide and up to 3 m high. The origins and date of the wall are still disputed, with some claiming that it is a 3,000-year-old druid construction and more recent research suggesting that it dates from the 7th century AD, about the time that the convent was built. The designation "Pagan" is attributed to Pope Leo IX.

Linderhof Palace (German: Schloss Linderhof) is a Palace in Germany, in southwest Bavaria near Ettal Abbey. It is the smallest of the three palaces built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria and the only one which he lived to see completed.

The gardens surrounding Linderhof Palace are considered one of the most beautiful creations of historicist garden design, designed by Court Garden Director Carl von Effner. The park combines elements of Renaissance and Baroque formal gardens with landscaped sections that are similar to the English landscape garden.

The landscape garden covers an area of about 50 hectares (125 acres) and is perfectly integrated in the surrounding natural alpine landscape.

PS Unfortunately, this time it was forbidden to take pictures inside.

The St. Martin's Parish Church is a stunning example of Baroque architecture, built in the 18th Century, this church has stood as a testament to the brilliant craftsmanship of the period. From the building itself, designed by master builder Josef Schmutzer, to the beautiful recently restored frescoes by Matthäus Günther and the incredibly fine sculptures of the Apostles, Peter and Paul by Anton Sturm. It's easy to get lost in the beauty of the frescoes, the warm colors and life-like imagery superbly created by Matthäus Günther in this peaceful haven in Garmisch.

The Zugspitze belongs to the Wetterstein range of the Northern Limestone Alps. The Austria–Germany border goes right over the mountain.

The Zugspitze has 20 kilometres of pistes enjoy a deep covering of natural snow for skiing and boarding for six months of the year but is also an attractive destination for non-skiers: Right at the top, an impressive 360° panorama opens up to reveal extensive views over 400 mountain peaks in four countries.

To get to the peak of Zugspitze, you can take the cog wheel train from Zugspitze station Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the idyllic Lake Eibsee.

Here there are three cable cars and five hiking paths/mountaineering routes to the top. Cable Car from Germany: The Eibsee-Seilbahn cable car takes visitors from Eibsee, the lake at the foot of Zugspitze, to the peak, in 10 minutes.

Or by train entering into a tunnel and continues underground on the cog wheel route until you arrive, 70 minutes later, at the Zugspitzplatt at 2600m. This is not the summit but a flattish area which sits atop the Zugspitze glacier.
