Thanks to super-easy direct flights from Stuttgart to Porto via Eurowings, I visited Portugal twice last year; once for a family trip and once for a girls’ trip. Both trips followed a similar route, with a few extra day trips sprinkled in.
From those trips, I put together a 7–10 day Portugal itinerary for first-time visitors that includes a little bit of everything: cities, beaches, wine country, historic sites, and plenty of good food.
The itinerary is also relatively slow-paced, making it a great option for families, couples, or solo travelers.
📍 Porto
•Brunch at Garden Porto
•Pork sandwich, or pernil, from Casa Guedes
•Dinner at Restaurante Casario (make a reservation)
•Fábrica da Nata & Manteigaria
•Boat tour along the Douro | Livraria Lello | Igreja dos Carmelitas & Igreja do Carmo | São Bento
🍷 Douro Valley
🌊 Costa Nova
🏛️ Coimbra + Óbidos
📍 Lisbon
•Ride Tram 28 (recommended for later in the evening to avoid long wait times to board the tram during busy seasons)
•Convento do Carmo
•Scenic Viewpoints (sunrise or sunset options): Miradouro de Santa Luzia, Miradouro da Graça, or Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara
•Dinner at Rocco (trendy, reservations required)
•Belém District (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, and Pastéis de Belém)
