Testing My Future Hasselblad Lens Choice...

Today I did a simple, but very revealing experiment.

As I'm planning to move into the Hasselblad X System, I've been trying to decide which lens should become my first XCD lens. Instead of relying on specifications or online opinions, I decided to let my own photography answer the question.

I locked my Canon RF 14–35mm f/4 at 30mm, which closely matches the field of view of the Hasselblad XCD 38V on the X2D II, and spent the day photographing exactly the subjects I naturally gravitate towards.

Looking through the images afterwards, one thing became very clear.

Many of these compositions simply wouldn't have been possible with the narrower field of view of the XCD 55V. Architecture, interiors, urban landscapes and environmental scenes all benefited from the wider perspective. These are the kinds of photographs I enjoy making most when I'm out exploring with a camera.

The test also confirmed something else: my long-term lens combination is probably the one I originally had in mind.

XCD 38V for:

Architecture
Street photography
Travel
Everyday photography
Landscapes and environmental scenes

…and later adding the XCD 90V for:

Studio portraits
Environmental portraits
Outdoor portrait sessions with portable lighting

Rather than trying to find one lens that does everything, I think these two lenses complement the way I photograph.

Sometimes the best camera decisions don't come from reading reviews—they come from spending a day making photographs.

I'm looking forward to taking the next step into the Hasselblad world.

A single fraction of a second can become a lasting memory, allowing us to revisit something that will never exist in quite the same way again. These photographs were taken last winter at "Den Permanente" in Risskov, Denmark.
