The former monastery Arbejdsrefugiet Ørslev Kloster , which since 1969 has served as a retreat for writers, artists, researchers and businesspeople, has long been on my list of places where I would like to spend a few weeks. My dream was rekindled when I visited Astrid Skibsted in Aarhus to conduct an interview for the HÅNDVÆRK bookazine 12, in 2024.

Two weeks ago I had the pleasure- and you are welcome to join my visit- by reading latest online article- follow link in profile to online magazine

theme transformation.

Our language is currently expanding, as it absorbs new words and concepts, and familiar words take on new meanings. Circular, regenerative, downcycling, upcycling, to mention just a few. What they have in common is an attempt to capture a movement, something that is changing – or has already transformed – from earlier understandings to a more contemporary one shaped by resource, biodiversity and climate crises and the need to find new solutions.

This is both interesting and complex – because what do the words actually mean?

If we speak of agriculture, the term ‘regenerative’ is only really meaningful in connection with ‘organic’ – otherwise, it may still involve the use of pesticides. If we use ‘regenerative’ about anything that doesn’t come from nature, you should be sceptical, because the only thing that can ever truly regenerate is the planet’s ecosystems.

‘I see CIRCULARITY as the general law – the law of ecology – as we mimic the way nature functions: an existing system in which anything that is created – including anything we create – has an intrinsic life that is TRANSFORMED and becomes something else.’
Designer Pil Bredahl, in the article THREADED WITH THE WORLD.

In HÅNDVÆRK bookazine 15, the theme of TRANSFORMATION is put into perspective through conversations with, among others, Andreas Just Karberg, Anne Lene Jørgensen, Anders Petersen and Kari Svarre, Camilla Berner, Claus Sønderby, Elly Feldstein, Jacob Westergaard Madsen, Janne Axelsen, Jonas Edvard, Julie Fuhlendorff, Marie-Louise Rosholm, Mathias Cohrt Pedersen, Mette Meldgaard, Mette Palsteen, Pil Bredahl, Sif Thieme and Andreas Dalland, Signe Fensholt, Thit Moses, and Thomas Woltmann.

On these beautiful late-summer days, I’m reminded that it has been eight years since I photographed this still life, featuring flowers from the now-closed Vilde Violer, ceramics by Sarah Oakman and textiles by Karin Carlander
The image appeared in my book HÅNDVÆRK, published at the end of 2018.

The following year, in 2019, the very first HÅNDVÆRK Bookazine was launched.

And in exactly two weeks, Issue No. 15 will be released.
You can now pre-order a single copy or subscribe to receive this and future issues. Follow the link in bio.

Lisbet Friis, aka Lisbet Friis , is a true master, and revisiting her through the image archive has been a pleasure in this final post of the Down Memory Lane series.
I visited textile printer her at her workshop in Raadvad, north of Copenhagen, to talk about her career as a pattern designer, textile printer and artist ahead of the exhibition Stoftryk Nu (Textile Printing Now), which took place earlier this year at Designmuseum Danmark. We also spoke about the experience and responsibility of having apprentices.

You can read about both Lisbet Friis and her apprentice Josefina Enevold in HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 14.
In HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 14, you will meet, through a series of double portraits, masters and apprentices: people of knowledge, skill and passion, craftspeople and makers who carry cultural traditions forward.

You will also be introduced to a wide range of masterworks and the masters behind them.

The road of my memories is long. Hedestrik ’s journey, on the other hand, has been remarkably short.
Occasionally, an initiative captures the spirit of its time with such precision that success seems almost inevitable.
One such example is Hedestrik, whose approach is rooted in what they call dogma knitting.

I met Maja and Liva in January 2025. Back then, their venture was already attracting attention and enjoying considerable success.

When I wrote their story a few months later, in May 2025, they had grown from a promising initiative into a household name, at least in households where wool and knitting matter.

I portrayed them in HÅNDVÆRK Bookazine No. 13, published in September 2025. Since then, their journey has only become more remarkableand more inspiring.

Ninna Gøtzsche / Ninna Gøtzsche has a workshop and shop in central Aarhus.
Sve creates utilitarian ceramics in porcelain clay and tells me, ‘Your morning coffee tastes better when you drink it out of a unique, handmade cup or mug that fits in your hands.’ (photo 2)
She always throws her ceramics on the potter’s wheel and subsequently modifies them in various ways – carving them with a knife, cutting them into pieces and putting them back together in new ways or pushing and pinching the clay. A good example of her approach is the large double-walled vase resembling an elder bush with ripe berries (photo 1).
