منذُ صِغَري، كنتُ أُحبُّ أن أتأمَّلَ النَّوارسَ وهي تُحلِّقُ في السَّماءِ.
كنتُ أُراقبُ الأشكالَ التي ترسمُها بأجنحتِها؛ تبدو عشوائيَّةً، لكنَّها تُخفي سيمفونيَّةً لا يفهمُها إلَّا مَن يُجيدُ الإصغاءَ إلى الصَّمت. كانت تجعلُني لا أملُّ من تأمُّلِها، فتظلُّ عيناي تركضانِ خلفَها... حتى أشعرَ أنَّني سافرتُ معها، بعيدًا، في سماءٍ لا تعرفُ الحدود.

ودائمًا كنتُ أتمنَّى أن أكونَ مثلَها... أن أطيرَ مثلَها.

في طفولتي، كنتُ أصعدُ إلى سطحِ بيتِ جدّي في القصبة، الحيِّ العريقِ الذي كبرتُ فيه، وأجلسُ بالساعاتِ فقط في انتظارِها. كانت تمرُّ فوقي، وأنا أُحاولُ أن أحفظَ مساراتِها، وكأنَّ كلَّ جناحٍ منها كان يرسمُ حلمًا جديدًا.
‏Since I was a child, I have loved watching gulls soar across the sky.
‏I was fascinated by the shapes they drew with their wings. They seemed random, yet they carried a hidden symphony that could only be understood by those who know how to listen to silence. I never grew tired of watching them. My eyes would follow every movement until I felt as though I had traveled with them, far away, into a sky that knew no borders.
‏I always wished I could be like them... I wished I could fly.
‏As a child, I would climb onto the rooftop of my grandfather’s house in the Casbah, the historic neighborhood where I grew up, and sit there for hours simply waiting for them. They would pass overhead while I tried to memorize their paths, as if every wingbeat were sketching a new dream across the sky

Algeria, 2026........._............

‏The Belarej, as Algerians call the White Stork, is more than just a migratory bird—it is part of Algeria’s cultural memory

Many of us grew up listening to the traditional song Ya Belarej , making this graceful bird a symbol of longing, homecoming, and fidelity.

I had never seen it as beautifully as I did in the province of Batna, where I found it nesting atop tall trees, far from the noise of the cities. It was a timeless scene, with the storks standing quietly over their massive nests, as if guarding a place untouched by time.

Every spring, the White Stork returns to build its nest in high places and is well known for its strong pair bond and loyalty to the same nesting site. Although deeply rooted in Algerian culture, sightings have become less common in recent years due to habitat loss, the decline of suitable nesting sites, and rapid urban expansion. Today, encountering the Belarej in the wild feels like a rare privilege—and a reminder of the importance of protecting the landscapes it calls home.
