DoubleTree by Hilton, Mongroovy El Gouna - Designed by .ghoneimi

“The essence of Red Sea living is the movement of light, air, and water,” Shadi explains. “We designed spaces that mirror that essence—tight corridors opening into airy pockets, shadows dancing across mashrabiya screens, and the sound of water as a constant note in the background.”__Shadi El Ghoneimi
That triad - light, air, and water - defines the project’s experiential language. Reflective pools and fountains punctuate the courtyards, animating the architecture with shimmer and sound. Vertical circulation towers reinterpret the region’s historic windcatchers, channeling breezes through the complex.

Sunlight filters through contemporary mashrabiyas whose geometric patterns, abstracted from mangrove silhouettes, cast a constantly shifting play of shadow from dawn to dusk.

A day in Imlil
An unplanned trip unfolded into something rare.
Water folding over stone, mist dissolving edges,
paths revealing themselves only as you move through them.
We followed the waterfall upward until the landscape softened into clouds, and the Atlas mountain stopped being something we looked at and became something we were inside.
We randomly passed by Kasbah du Toubkal, were we had a pause to grasp what we have seen, and catch our breath from the hike, turns out to be one of the most unique lodges we have visited.

beefbar Almaza Bay - Designed by Else Lab .lab, the project resists spectacle in favor of sensorial clarity. It is an architecture that recedes, allowing space to breathe, light to linger, and experience to unfold at its own pace.

Architectural photo shoots are often scheduled once a house is fully furnished and accessorized. Most designers rely heavily, sometimes almost entirely, on furniture selection, decoration, and the careful curation of artwork and accessories to express their work.

This project is an exception.

When Reha called and shared her concept, I was immediately drawn to the idea of photographing the house before it was furnished. Her design process begins with understanding the personality and preferences of the owner, but it moves beyond objects. It’s an exploration of scale and materiality. She thinks through the architecture, its lines, openings, and vistas, along with the dialogue of materials that age gracefully, and the textures and colors that shape the experience of the space.
At this stage of the project, Reha challenged herself and pushed several ideas that define the space: the sculptural stairway, the knife-edge pool, and the bold presence of pink.
These elements establish a language that will continue to evolve as the design process unfolds.

More to come from this project.

A walk in Casablanca, starting from the vibrant Square of Pigeons with the iconic Grand Théâtre de Casablanca in the background. Passing through the streets, I captured the blend of historical and contemporary architecture, including the AXA Building, a masterpiece by the architect Jean-François Zevaco. Ending the day with the serene beauty of the Hassan II Mosque and a delightful evening at Dar Dada restaurant.

Place Mohammed V, known as the Square of Pigeons, is a central plaza in downtown Casablanca that has been the city’s administrative and architectural heart since 1916. It features a grand open space often filled with pigeons, surrounded by landmarks like the Wilaya, the Palace of Justice, the Central Post Office, and the Bank Al-Maghrib. The recently opened Grand Théâtre de Casablanca, designed by French Architect Christian de Portzamparc, adds a modern touch to the historic setting.

Jean-François Zevaco was a renowned Moroccan architect known for his innovative modernist designs. Active from the 1950s through the 1970s, Zevaco’s work is characterized by bold geometric forms, the use of raw concrete, and a seamless integration with the surrounding environment. His architectural legacy includes numerous landmarks in Casablanca and other Moroccan cities, making him a key figure in the country’s architectural heritage.

The Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca was designed by French Architect Michel Pinseau and opened in 1993. It can hold up to 105,000 worshippers, with a 210-meter minaret that was once the tallest in the world. The mosque is partly built over the Atlantic Ocean and features a retractable glass roof. More than 6,000 Moroccan artisans contributed to its intricate interior details, making it a blend of tradition and modernity.

During my last year’s visit to Bangaladesh and while shooting for Aedas in Dhaka, I had the chance to visit a project that I was always fascinated by, Bait Ur Rouf by a mosque with a modest budget donated by the community and built in brick using traditional methods, this mosque is an attempt to create a language of architecture that takes essence from the glorious legacy of mosque architecture in Bengal during the Sultanate period, while maintaining a contemporary expression. It won the Agha Khan Award for Architecture in 2016
I was there in March, the interior would be more magical during summer when the sun altitude is higher throwing light rays from the ceiling small round openings.

Situated at the foothills of the Margalla Hills, Faisal Mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan, is an iconic, contemporarily designed national mosque, the largest in South Asia (6th largest worldwide). Completed in 1986, designed by Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay, inspired by a Bedouin tent, featuring four 90-meter minarets and a massive capacity for up to 250,000+ worshippers.
