Lock Cauldron a beautiful, if cold, day in Manchester: stayed clear of boats, but the canal waters continued to drift, rush or - when hitting the locks -gush foaming onto their new levels

'Yes,' said Pippin; 'I'm afraid this is only a passing gleam, and it will all go grey again. What a pity! This shaggy old forest looked so different in the sunlight. I almost felt I liked the place.'

Burning Down the House: 2012 (Canon 5D) memories at the Olympic Stadium. I was very lucky to get a ticket (big thanks to ) and saw cool stuff (mainly being awesome) and quite a lot of rain (oh, 2012 😓) but I was hugely mesmerised by ‘s astonishing Olympic cauldron that looked over my seat - though I don’t remember realising how much his beautiful petals look like crazy lower teeth from the wrong angle. #2012

Leaping to 2012, and a (freezing) jaunt to NYC. It was March but the winter didn’t want to end and I was battered by sleet and snow. The top of the Empire State was a particularly nippy experience, but of course the view was captivating and I didn’t want to leave, so I retreated behind glass. That meant I wasn’t going to get any special traditional photos, so my 300D and I got creative and spent about an hour messing around with and getting funky shots of the awesome - some were better than others but this one is a favourite. My fingers were numb for days, though.

Karijini Clouds - a long and ridiculous story attached to this 2005 photograph. I had driven from Exmouth in Western Australia to carry Karijini with the idea of taking photographs of it Legendury read canyons, but on my arrival at the town of Tom Price just outside the National Park I found my camera - a canon Ixus - had managed to get a tiny grain of sand deep inside the lens mechanism. All my attempts to disassemble and reassemble the camera to leave it clean and functional completely failed, and I was forced to do the next best thing available and buy a small disposable camera from a convenience store. So all my pictures of the stunning Karijini National Park consist of strange and blurry makeshift images. Still, a few of them came out surprisingly well if one can forgive the lack of sharpness. The clouds here shown swept in on a huge gale that made it impossible for me to pitch my tent so I had to sleep inside my hire car.

Toupee: back in time to 2003 again. Rainy old Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park offered up a damp Marscape as I wandered around its mini-canyons to the sound of trickling waterfalls. Kata Tjuta (formerly The Olgas) maybe less inconuc than Uluru but it’s a lot more engaging close up. Nevertheless it was this distance shot, with the rocks topped with a cotton wool cloud, that stayed with me.
