One of those encounters I had been waiting for…and one I wasn’t expecting to have this close 👀

This is the Asian hornet.

I’ve seen plenty of photos of this species, but seeing one alive in the field and being able to photograph it up close is a completely different experience.

Once you get close enough, you start noticing all those details that you normally miss...the colours, the texture, the hairs, the incredible structure of the head and body.

It’s a beautiful insect to photograph, even when you know it’s a species that can have a serious impact on our native ecosystems.

Nature is full of these contradictions: something can be fascinating to look at and still be a problem for the environment.

Have you ever seen one alive in the wild? 🐝

I’ve photographed mantises many times, but I never get tired of looking into their eyes 👀

There’s something almost unreal about them.

When you see a mantis from a distance, you see a beautiful green insect. But get close enough with a macro lens…and suddenly you’re looking at something completely different.

The tiny facets of the eyes, the textures, the reflections, those little hairs…

Details that are always there, but that we normally never get to see.

That’s probably what I love most about macro photography...getting close enough to discover a completely different world in something we might otherwise just walk past 🔍

Be honest… would you have noticed all these details without the macro? 👀

I remember getting really close to this one and thinking…wow, those eyes 👀

And like so many insects I photograph, it’s one of those animals that looks completely different once you slow down and take a closer look.

From a distance, you see a beautiful dragonfly.

But through a macro lens, you start discovering another world...tiny facets, little hairs, colours and reflections that you simply don’t notice in the field.

That’s one of the things I love most about macro photography: finding details that were there all along, just waiting to be seen 🔍

Have you ever noticed the blue tones underneath a dragonfly’s eyes?

A closer look at a wasp doing what wasps do 🐝

Hidden among these tiny yellow flowers, this wasp was busy feeding on its prey.

At first, the scene looks almost peaceful...bright flowers, soft colours and a beautiful insect.

But look closer 👀

Macro photography has a way of revealing the other side of nature: the tiny moments of hunting, feeding and survival that happen right in front of us.

Nothing staged. Just nature doing its thing.

A face you don't normally get to see this close 👀

From a distance, just a small mantis.

But get close enough…and suddenly you discover an entirely different world.

Every tiny detail is there: the thousands of individual facets in the eyes, the delicate hairs, the intricate structures of the face...details that are almost impossible to appreciate with the naked eye.

This is exactly why I love macro photography.

Sometimes, you don't need to find something rare.

You just need to look closer 🔍

💬 Have you ever stopped to look at a mantis this closely?

A tiny encounter in the wild 🦗🐌

Sometimes, the most interesting moments in macro photography aren't about a single subject.

This mantis was sharing its little corner of the world with a snail...and, for a few moments, they made the perfect scene.

Nature doesn't need to be staged. You just have to be there when it happens.

💬 What do you think...friends, neighbours or simply two creatures crossing paths?

My first encounter with an Asian hornet 🐝

After photographing so many different insects over the years, it’s strange to think that I had never seen one of these in person.

This was my first time seeing and photographing Vespa velutina in the field...and, of course, I couldn’t resist getting as close as possible 🔍

Up close, those colours and textures are incredible…although I have to admit, I was a little more aware of how close I was than usual 😅

At first glance, just a dragonfly.

But look closer 👀

The wings, the tiny hairs, the intricate patterns…details that disappear completely when you see it from a distance.

That’s what I love about macro photography: taking something familiar and revealing a world that was always there, just too small for our eyes to notice.

Sometimes, you only need to look a little closer 🔍

💬 What’s the first detail you noticed?

There’s something unsettling about looking straight into the eyes of a mantis 👀

Up close, their face looks almost unreal...every tiny detail, every facet of those incredible eyes.

This is one of those encounters where macro photography completely changes the way you see a familiar animal.

A face we normally overlook suddenly becomes an entire world.

💬 Be honest…would you stare back or look away? 👀

You probably know this little face…but maybe not by the same name.

In my village, we call them “dragó” or "dragonet" (It would translate more or less as “dragon” in Catalan 🐉).

This is a Tarentola mauritanica, the Moorish gecko, a familiar sight around Mediterranean homes and walls.

I love how something so common can become completely different when you look at it through a macro lens. Those scales, that eye…a tiny dragon hiding in plain sight.

💬 What do you call them where you live? I’d love to know how this little “dragon” is known in different parts of the world.
