"Debería el joven, al salir de los estudios, llevar impresa en su mente una concepción fecunda de la vida y sus manifestaciones, sellado en su espíritu el concepto vivo de la naturaleza viva. Pero nada de esto sucede. Nuestras deplorables tradiciones escolásticas que hacen de toda enseñanza una disciplina predominante o exclusivamente literaria, la desatención de la opinión pública y la organización detestable de nuestra enseñanza hace que no se saque sino una fría y mecánica concepción de casillero.
Cualquiera creería que el fin de la ciencia es ordenar despojos, que el espíritu se enriquece con algún concepto vivo cuando aprende a llamar "melolontha vulgaris" al cocharro o "felix catus" al gato que el fin de la ciencia es catalogar el universo y aprender una nueva jerga. Salimos de tales enseñanzas incapaces de discernir en la pata de un caballo el talón de la rodilla y mucho más de conocer los dedos del toro."
