The past weeks I returned to Middle Egypt with the Qaw el-Kebir Expedition to work on the monumental tombs of the Middle Kingdom governors buried in the necropolis of Qaw el-Kebir: Wahka I, Ibu, Sobekhotep and Wahka II.

It is no surprise that they chose the most striking mountain in the area for their funerary complexes, with the lushest cultivated lands stretching out before them, perhaps as a way to benefit in the afterlife from the fertility of the land, along with the vitality of the farmers, villagers and animals who lived and worked there.

Thousands of years later, things have probably not changed much. While we study, document and do our best to preserve this tombs for the future, daily life continues to unfold in front of them. Sheperds pass by every day, families tend the land, and commuters come and go from one village to another for work or everyday errands.

The quiet coexistence between past and present and how the latest is woven into modern daily life is something that deeply fascinates me and a theme I try to capture as much as I can in my pictures. Through them, here I introduce you to the necropolis of Qaw el-Kebir, not exclusively from an archaeological perspective but from a more humane one.
