San’in (山陰) PART 2 — a name that quietly holds a landscape.

In Japanese, it means “north” and “shadow,” the yin side of the mountain — the place where light arrives later, softer, filtered. A geography defined not by absence, but by a different rhythm of presence.

San’in is not only a region. It is a way of understanding space: where mountains protect, where the sea breathes slowly, where time seems to settle into the contours of the land.

There is something deeply photographic about this idea — the shadow side, where details emerge gradually.

Novità nel menù di Casa Gidela!

Siamo felici di presentarvi la nostra nuova fideuà di pesce, un piatto ricco di storia e sapore mediterraneo.

Preparata con fidei fini tagliati a mano, un brodo intenso di pesce di scoglio, vongole, cozze, calamari e pesce di stagione, questa fideuà racconta la tradizione marinara del Grau de Gandía, dove nacque per caso a bordo di un peschereccio.

Quando il cuoco si accorse di non avere riso per la paella, usò i fidei, creando così un piatto sorprendente che conquistò l’intero equipaggio. Da quel momento, la ricetta si diffuse lungo tutta la costa.

Un piatto autentico, profumato di mare e storia.

From our home/refuge in the smallest village in southern Sardinia, Armungia, we have been working for the last month, searching for our most representative images and works of the last 20 years.

6- Children Action. Swiss foundation, 2015.
Founded in 1994, Children Action is a Swiss charitable foundation dedicated to providing tangible support to children and adolescents facing extreme situations around the world. The foundation runs its own programs and focuses on the strategic development, implementation, and long-term monitoring of initiatives aimed at improving the lives of young people.

The project: A powerful short-film and documentary pictures, commissioned by the foundation, unveiled in February 2015 at the Children Action Gala Dinner in Geneva, to raise funds and awareness.
Over the course of three months, we filmed and photographed in Peru, Cameroon, Vietnam, and Geneva, giving voice to young people confronting life-and-death challenges.

6- The Latent Image. Portraits with camera.
Mekelle, Etiopía 2011-2013

"This has been the project of our lives—driven by its profoundly human essence, shaped by the challenges we faced, the vast distance we crossed, and the years of dedication it demanded."

An art/documentary journey that took place between 2011 and 2013, exploring the realm of memory and the latent images that remain in the minds of those who once saw and later went blind—reversible blind patients on the verge of seeing again.
The work was carried out during a brief but powerful window of 48 hours, as these individuals transitioned from darkness back to sight.
Created in Mekelle, capital of Tigray in northern Ethiopia, at the field hospital within the Saint Louise Eye Clinic.

6- Making-of The latent image. Portraited Self-portrait. 2013-2015.
During our third trip to Mekelle, the capital of northern Ethiopia, as we neared the end of our project The Latent Image, we decided to take a portrait on our improvised photo set—inside the post-op room of a clinic located within a nunnery.

Every morning, once the patients had either returned home or gone into surgery, Ana and I would dismantle the cots and set up our flash equipment to prepare for a new session.

As a farewell gesture after more than three intense months in Mekelle, we felt the need to leave a small mark—intervening in some of the walls, streets, and spaces we passed through daily. That’s how this playful piece came to life. Just a wink, a small offering, nothing more.

We called it Portraited Self-Portrait.
