It was the annual Camera Show yesterday in the Fair Center, Helsinki.
As always the first half of the day was reserved for the professionals. There was great interest in the new A series cameras.
Since almost everyone wanted to try the new A7III I had only a few minutes to take some test shots. The venue was lit, well like a fair with mixed lights - not great to be honest.
Here is two jpegs straight from the camera. Shot with the 24-70 F2.8 G Master lens, AWB, 1/60 and f6.3. ISO 8000.
I was impressed! Very fast autofocus and sharp images. I also have the RAW images and will get back to them later.
The first gentleman is Patrik Roberttson from Sweden and the second is Sony Global Imaging Ambassador Jaakko Posti from Finland.

Testing the Sony A9, part one.

Last weekend we (my wife and I) went for a walk in Seurasaari, which is a small recreational and outdoor museum island very near to where we live. Pockets full squirrel cryptonite - nuts, we headed for the woods to feed them and the little birds too.
Unfortunately the sun went behind a big dark cloud and all of a sudden it was dark.
I had the 70-200/4 G lens on the A9. I kept the shutter speed at 1/2000th and the aperture at 5.6. Auto ISO was between 100-6400 but in actual use it was 6400 all the time and even this wasn't enough. Most of the images were seriously underexposed but I thought it would be a good opportunity to test the sensor as well. But later about this.
Here is three pictures to show the speed of the A9.
Those little birds are really fast! I was some three meters away from her hand and the lens was at 93mm. You can see that the little guy just grabbed at nut and took of instantly. The distance between the moment he took off and the moment he left the frame was less then half a meter. The A9 was able to lock on the bird and hold on to the focus untill he flew out of the picture.
Keep in mind that this three frame was taken in the dark at close distance and the 20fps of the camera did very well.
I shot Raw+jpeg and here you see the straight jpegs.

Sony A9 on the road, part three.

You see, I am not a Nature photographer. However, thanks to the 20fps and the no blackout EVF, even I could come up with this tern portrait in the second picture. The little guy was attacking me in Sommarøy, Norway because I went too close his nest, not realising they had baby terns. He is in for the kill....
As you can see in the first image, the wide array of focussing points tracks the bird very well although he? it? is barely inside the frame.
Both shot with the Sony A9, 70-200/4 G lens.
PS. The completely silent shutter also a big help with animals.

Sony A9 on the road, part two.

The Arctic Cathedral, Tromsø, Norway.
The easy, effortless shooting with the A9 is simply blows your mind. I never had a camera anything like this before.
As I mentioned before, these are strictly my feelings, but oh boy....I do like the camera.

Sony A9 on the road, part one.

I left last last week for a small family trip to Lappland. We - I - drove from Helsinki to the Artic Circle to visit Santa Clause and from there to the Norwegian alps.
Since this was not a photography trip I thought it would be a good idea to bring my Sony A9 and get to know it in a week.
Of course this wasn't the proper camera for a travel type of shooting since it was, is, targeted at sport, wedding and nature photographers who need the advantages this camera brings to the table, so to speak.
This is not a review, just my feelings and observations about it.
The first two days was cold and rainy. I took my first shot on the second day and I really liked the way it felt in my hand and also the solid built of it. It is heavier and a tiny bit bigger then my other A7 series cameras.
I had the Zeiss 35/1.4, the Zeiss 55/1.8, the Zeiss 16-35/4 and the G 70-200/4 with me. The 35mm did most of the work.
Since I had no raw converter with me, I'll post images later. This one is a small 10Mb jpeg, straight out from the camera.
I used the lens mostly wide open.
The experience of shooting with the A9 was so good that I just once used my trusted A7rmk2. It felt a bit old fahioned and clumsy.
The new EVF and the full electronic shutter are just great. You really have to try it to see it for yourself how good they are. The battery seems to work well, two days walking around in the cold (+3 degrees) and take some test shoots in the rain didn't drain it almost at all.

Oldie but goldie. This test picture was taken with the Sony NEX 5N (16Mp) and the Vizelex Rhino Cam using the Hasselblad Zeiss Planner 2.8/80mm lens.
The size of the original image is 17128x5290px at 300dpi. This was 8 images in 2 rows.
Cropped the boring foreground.
Now they have the New Rhino Cam which takes the FF cameras like the Sony A7r mk2, so you can takes some 250+Mp images.
Sweet 😀 Check it out!

Here is a very quick, "bread and butter" shot from last week.
The setup was about five minutes and post work another five, thanks to the really good sensor in my A7ll with the FE 4/16-35 ZA OSS lens.
Shot in RAW. The lighting was with a Bi-colour LED panel.
