Colombia’s Showstopper: The Bird with Style and Swagger
Colombia photo workshops
Let’s talk about one of the wildest hairdos in the animal kingdom: the Andean cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruvianus).
These birds are the head-turners of the cloud forests, rocking (pun intended) their bright orange/red plumage and flamboyant crest that looks like it’s straight out of a high-fashion runway.
Captured during my last workshop in Colombia, I wanted to show you these beauties in ways you don’t often see—unique poses, intriguing angles, and even some of their quirky expressions.
Known for their peculiar appearance and behavior, male cock-of-the-rocks gather in noisy leks (think bird nightclubs) to show off their moves. It’s all about impressing the ladies with fancy hops, exaggerated calls, and that unmistakable crown. Think of it as the bird equivalent of speed dating—intense and competitive!
These birds thrive in the misty Andean forests, a perfect backdrop for their vibrant colors to pop. Seeing them in action is a photographer’s dream—and I’m so excited to share these moments with you.
