Yesterday I went on a road trip that was equal parts fantastic and completely crazy with my friend Thomas Hultquist and his daughter Alice. We headed north from Brittatorp in the northern part of Växjö Municipality at 10:45 pm on Tuesday evening, with our sights set on Gålö Nature Reserve and the dalmatian pelican that had been seen around Blista Bay since Walpurgis Night.

The first-ever record of a dalmatian pelican in Sweden was in the summer of 2025, but I never managed to go see it then. The same individual turned up again this year – first briefly in Uppland, then just as briefly in Östersund, before hanging around for a few days south of Stockholm.

We seized the opportunity and drove north through the night. Once we arrived at Stegsholm Farm before sunrise, we walked out to the headland where we understood we would have the best chance of getting good views of the pelican – provided it was still there.

When we reached the Skäret point at Blista Bay, we could confirm that the pelican was indeed still present, sleeping on a rock barely 150 metres from the shore 😍 The joy was complete. After a while, just as the first rays of sunlight hit the beast, it woke up and stood upright – an absolutely magnificent experience 🤩 We spent almost four hours with the dalmatian pelican and eventually got to see it alslo in flight – an immensely impressive creature, to say the least, with a wingspan of more than 320 cm! 😳 Later the same day, the pelican was spotted in Gävle, some 160 km, as the bird flies, from where we saw it!

Buzzing with adrenaline and floating on clouds, we decided to also “swing by” Kungsträdgården in Stockholm to try to see the ring-billed gull that has returned to the site for a second year. We found a parking garage within comfortable walking distance of the target area, and only a few minutes later the ring-billed gull made its entrance and completely took over Kungsträdgården – incredibly dominant and cheeky towards the other gulls trying to grab some of the chips and bread generously handed out by random Stockholm teenagers 🥹

Back home in Växjö in time for dinner with my wife and daughter. A day well spent 😎

Today, I guided at Husebymaden some 20 km from Växjö. A really sunny and beautiful day – although a bit windy. 36 people showed up and we managed to record 66 different species from the birdwatching tower. Among them, this male marsh harrier that flew past the tower at quite close range on several occassions.

View from Work

In early April last year, I was in Österund with my friend Thomas Hultquist doing golden eagle monitoring in connection to potential wind power. This was the view when you were scanning the mountain sides for golden eagles – I just love the intricate and repetitive patterns created by the spruces and the other trees😊

Join me in The Gambia 5–15 November, 2027🇬🇲

In autumn 2027, I’ll be leading an eleven-day Birdwatching with camera-trip to The Gambia for AviFauna Naturresor on which we will visit almost every part of the small West African country, go on several boat trips on the Gambia and Allahain Rivers, visit coastal lagoons, huge mangrove swamps, jungle, and savannah. Tag along and hang out with cheeky fellows like the green vervet monkey in the first photo – who at the time of being photographed had just stolen my wonjo juice. Waiting for us is also a huge host of cool and colourful bird species like kingfishers, bee-eaters, rollers and sunbirds as well a fantastic diversity of raptors and wetland birds!🤩

All photos in the post are my own, taken on two previous trips to the The Gambia and Senegal.

Join me in Extremadura, Spain, 27 April–5 May 2027🇪🇸

In spring 2027, I’ll be leading a nine-day Birdwatching-with-camera trip for AviFauna Naturresor to Extremadura, perhaps Spain’s best-kept secret. A region where time seems to stand still and nature unfolds across a magnificent landscape of open plains, dramatic cliffs, and ancient oak forests. Here, some of Europe’s finest opportunities for birdwatching and nature photography await. We will also experience historic sites where the echoes of the past are vividly present. Wander through cobbled streets in medieval settings, discover Roman remains, and enjoy the views from ancient fortresses. All photos in the post are mine and were taken on my four previous trips to the region. Can’t wait to go back!😍

Changing of the Guards🦇
As night approaches, the city jackdaws in Växjö head for their roost sites as the night shift takes over. Tried my new camera (Canon R5) at Strandbjörket in central Växjö this evening. Not many photos taken so far, but it feels promising😊

Last Saturday I led a trip to Halland on the Swedish west coast for Växjö Bird Club. A lovely spring day with a good selection of nice birds. The undisputed highlight, however, was this gorgeous short-eared owl that was foraging over the meadows at Utteros nature reserve😍

In January 2028, I will be leading a Birdwatching-with-camera trip to Zambia. We will spend 10 days in three different areas: Lower Zambezi National Park, South Luangwa National Park, and Chisamba. These are truly incredible areas for both birds and mammals. Take a look at AviFauna Naturresor’s Marie Stridh’s photos from a previous trip she made to these locations 😍
Zambia is relatively sparsely populated, with a population of 20 million across an area that is almost twice the size of Sweden. South Luangwa National Park is 1.5 times the size of Gotland – a true wilderness! 🤩

Smew is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful ducks. It is also one of the more exclusive duck species in Sweden. Yesterday, eleven individuals were present in an open patch of water at Sundet, Norra Bergundasjön in Växjö. In contrast to their normal nature, they were also relatively confiding.
