The quality of a windsurfing final is dependent upon the depth of talent in the field that competes to reach that competition and certainly from what I saw in the last day of action for the Men’s and Amateurs competitions of the 3 star Wave Classic Moulay the talent was 5 star.

Also in a windsurfing competition, unlike most other sports, the final does not necessarily equate to the best action/conditions. This was a great day of competition. Here are a selection of shots from the men’s quarter finals and semi finals. I have already posted some shots from the final.

A big thanks has to go to Sergio and his team plus the sponsors that enabled this competition together and to all of the volunteers that help to ensure that it runs smoothly. Without the commitment and dedication of organisers, we would not have the wealth of great windsurfing competitions across the globe. And this is one of them for sure.

And well done to for his dedication and commitment to shoot every round of the competition and all of the work that people don’t see that goes in to producing a top notch set of shots for us all to enjoy. Respect.

Moulay Wave Classic Men’s final was a proper slugfest - all the riders exchanging blows, with each set that came in the riders were all over it, so blow after blow landed. Marwan has really moved forward since last year, much more powerful in his windsurfing and was all energy and hustle, working his waves to the max. Jahdan brought his Brasilian style combining power and grace, hitting some nice aerials and punching out his trademark ponch. With only waverides counting, Yves’ jumping game was taken out of the equation and his usual super sensitive wave radar was slightly off and so didn’t always have the best waves to work with. Like Marwan, Marc has taken a step forward in his windsurfing and congratulations on reaching the final. He was very busy, hitting some nice aerials and some smooth silky wave riding.

Wait to hear who came out on top at www.waveclassicmoulay.com

’m looking forward to returning to Moulay - it is a magical place, the culture clash is fantastic! A different way of being. A different timeline. A different space. A different set of opportunities. It’s refreshing for the soul.

The people are so friendly and so kind. And add to all that some world class wavesailing - what a fabulous trip!!

They call it the walk of shame, but not on this day in Brandon Bay, Ireland. This was the day of Storm Ophelia in 2017, the worst storm to hit Ireland for 50 years, with the biggest gusts ever recorded in Ireland of 191km/h at Fastnet Rock. It was an extraordinary day to experience since the eye of the storm passed directly over Brandon Bay. Once the eye passed, the winds picked up again and the crew surveilled the conditions. It was decided they would sail and headed out with due care and attention after a detailed strategy briefing. In those winds, getting blown downwind was the order of the day, so no, no walk of shame, not that day.

Back on the home beat! I love sailing at my home spot - not because it is awesome, but because it isn’t!?? It can be very gusty; off-shore winds with buildings behind the beach, so I launch and return in a wind shadow; there often can be two and sometimes three different swell directions and the wind can be flukey. But I reckon that I have learned so much more sailing in these conditions than if I were always sailing in ‘perfect’ conditions. You can’t just launch and sail out and back mindlessly - I have to find the best spot in the bay to sail in terms of sea state and wind; I have to always think about what my self-rescue options are ‘cos I am the only windsurfer (so whether there are other boats out or not); I need to be very aware of the forecast and to be aware of any changes in the wind, since I can’t afford to be too far from base if the wind drops.

Obviously I do drive to other, better, spots too - but my home spot is a 10 minute walk from my apartment, so I do love that session - good bad or indifferent. And sailing at this time of year, on a day like this, is gorgeous - the water is so refreshing, the sun is shining and I can be the only craft on the bay. What a privilege!

It's always awesome watching these two sailing in Jeri. Ian Mouro is a gentleman and absolutely rips - literally burying himself in the waves - always brilliant. And George, well he's sooooo much fun to watch - always sending it and this session from last Monday he came and had a play in the waves.
If you want to see more shots from that session and to see if you feature, head over to my website and check it out:
