Yesterdays post was a depressing one, so here’s a smiling fox.

This rabbit came bouncing towards me full of life. Excitement soon turned into concern as it became clear it was infected with the highly contagious myxomatosis.

Highly contagious only amongst rabbits and specifically European rabbits - cottontail rabbits of the Americas are apparently not effected!

It’s not a happy ending for the rabbits which contract this disease 😔

The red kite is absolutely soaked.

Great crested grebe with its chick, referred to as ‘humbugs’.
They often ride on their parents backs but unfortunately I didn’t wait around long enough for this shot and maybe this one is slightly too big!
Bah humbug

The last puffin on the island, for 2026 anyway.

I knew it was risky visiting in August, as puffins have typically finished breading season and left their burrows by the end of July, but still made the trip anyway! I got lucky.

Approaching the Farne Islands on the ferry, I spotted a puffin carrying sand eels ready for its puffling, this gave me hope that even at the beginning of August there could still be some puffins Inner Farne, which is where I was heading.

Puffins are typically only on land April - July whilst they’re breading and out at sea the rest of the year.
