Been lightly discombobulated for a while, but we're certainly not done for yet... There is still road left to cover! Now, listen: THIS is AWESOME! «Icons Of Cycling», the brainchild of Kirsten Van Steenberge, captures the thrill and fascination of professional cycling. Printed on high quality paper and gracefully presented, this is a gem!

«Compiling the work of some of the best cycling photographers, the book breathes the spirit of cycling — as close and emotional as if the viewer were part of the race. Discover extraordinary shots of the peloton winding along alpine serpentines; exhausted athletes at the end of a stage; and unknown heroes from the team behind the team. A microcosm of ambition and passion, pain and glory, this is both a photographic artwork and a contemporary document of a thriving sport. A cherished collector's item for every cycling enthusiast».

Also, the great Peter Sagan offers his thoughts on cycling, art, and photography in an exclusive and insightful foreword. Well worth a read!

Truly proud and happy to be in the company of friends and co-photographers Chris Auld, Pauline Ballet, Russ Ellis, James Startt and Klaas Jan van der Weij. Finally, kudos to teNeues Publishing for bringing this out to the people!

By all means: Get yerself a copy! Right over here https://www.fotoboekenshop.nl/product/icons-of-cycling-kirsten-van-steenberge/ or another quality bookshop…

Saturday 8th of April 2017: Last and final stage of the 57th Euskal Herriko Itzulia, la Vuelta al País Vasco. A 28 kilometer fight against the clock, starting in Eibar, finishing in Eibar... After yesterday's uphill battle, none less than five riders were locked on the same time as race leader Alejandro Valverde, with «El Pistolero» Contador still in contention just three seconds behind. It was gonna be a close one, and only the strongest rider would get to wear the winner's big, black «txapela» on the podium! Primož Roglič would eventually set the fastest time of the day, but it was finally Valverde that seized the overall title for the first time in his lengthy career, having only managed second place way back in 2006 behind another Spaniard, José Ángel Gómez Marchante. When the dust had settled, and strong coffees had been washed down, we embarked on an ill-conceived 10-hour drive through the night in Mr. Flockton’s Porsche to Compiègne in France for the start of Paris-Roubaix the following day…

In early April, the weather in the Basque Country can often be like playing the wheel of fortune: It is deceitful, unforseeable, erratic, and whimsical - as it can whip out three seasons in just a few hours! However, Bilbao, hosting the start of stage 5, was bathed in sun this April morning, and the sky was blue as the Biscay Bay. Mother Nature had set it up all perfectly for the Queen stage of the 57th edition of the Euskal Herriko Itzulia, la Vuelta al País Vasco… With six classified climbs packed into the 139.8km route to Eibar, riders were preparing for a painful day in the saddle. The summit finish on the Izuako Gaina climb would crack the race wide open... Alejandro Valverde chased down late-attackers Michael Woods and Louis Meintjes near the summit, bringing along Romain Bardet and Rigoberto Uran. Overnight race leader David de la Cruz lost contact on the steepest part of the final climb, and lost the leader's jersey to Valverde, who took a significant step closer to winning his first País Vasco overall…

6th of April 2017, Euskal Herriko Itzulia, la Vuelta al País Vasco, stage 4 from Donostia to Bilbo (San Sebastián to Bilbao)… Primož Roglič emerged as a rising star at the Giro d'Italia in 2016, and made it clear to everyone in the cycling world that it was no fluke by attacking on the final climb of the day and holding clear of the chasing pack, before finally succeeding on the flat run-in to the line. The fast finishers chasing behind scrambled for second place, with Team Sunweb's Michael «Bling» Matthews taking runner-up honours on the day and Bahrain Merida's Giovanni Visconti pipping Sky's Michal Kwiatkowski for third. Another stage in the Basque country under the belt, looking ahead for another night of pintxos and wine…

Three years ago, stage three from Gasteiz to Donostia, or San Sebastián if you like, a 160k roller coaster with no less than six categorised climbs! That's Basque climbs, in other words, savage climbs. David de la Cruz of Quick-Step Floors opened up an advantage on a select group of GC hopefuls cresting the final ascent, and stayed clear to the finish line, earning him the leader’s jersey at the same time. Out of a nine-man escape group earlier on, Alex Howes wrangles himself into polkadot after outsprinting Stéphane Rossetto on the Mandubiako and Santa Agedako climbs. Chapeau!

Vuelta al País Vasco 2017, etapa numero dos! Another start in Pamplona, but «una jornada diferente»… A hard finish according to the roadbook: «Los últimos 3 kilómetros son muy duros», and in the Basque country you should definitely draw attention to the word «muy»! No surprise, then, that it's Albasini who roars victoriously into the little town of Eltziego, located at the southern end of the province of Álava. With an honorable 4th place, Michael «Bling» Matthews holds on to the leader’s jersey… -Scott

Exasperating times, indeed. For obvious reasons, there is nothing new coming out of the ZUPERDEHLIE HQ, and in a state of pure distress the other day, we simply kicked in the consolidated doors of the ZUPERDEHLIE archives to see what we could find… So, three years ago, on this exact date, riders were called into action at the Plaza del Castillo in Pamplona for the 57th edition of the Euskal Herriko Itzulia, also known as la Vuelta al País Vasco - one of the most beautiful stage races on the UCI calendar. For unknown reasons, these images never got to live their rightful lives, so here's a timely, tiny throwback to Etapa Numero Uno: Pamplona to Eguesibar-Sarriguren… Michael «Bling» Matthews (Team Sunweb) storms to victory, and snatches the first leader’s jersey! -Scott
