Whoever designed the supermarket bread cutter clearly had one goal: maximum efficiency, minimum mercy.

You feed it an innocent loaf, it growls for a few seconds, and suddenly you've got perfectly sliced bread like it just completed a military operation.

I have equal parts respect and fear for this machine.

Summer in Galicia means one thing... every town seems to come alive with verbenas, fiestas, and celebrations.

This week it was our hometown, Cerdedo-Cotobade's, turn, and we checked out Queiman Folk-Rock. It was such an interesting mix of traditional Galician music with rock. I especially loved hearing and seeing the traditional music and customs brought to life on stage.

As for the AC/DC songs... let's just say I'm a huge AC/DC fan, so I'm probably impossible to please when it comes to someone else interpreting their music. 😅 But that's just my personal taste, and it definitely didn't take away from enjoying the experience.

We're loving getting to call Cerdedo home and experiencing these local traditions that make Galicia so special.

A few months ago, we shared photos of helping our neighbors plant their potatoes. Las week, it was time for the harvest... and let's just say we discovered there's a big difference between wanting to help and actually being helpful. 😂🥔

Maricarmen made it look so easy. By the time we picked up the pace, she was already more than a few rows ahead of us! We gave it our best shot, but it's clear we still have a lot to learn.

Poco a poco. That's one of the things we're loving most about life here... learning new traditions, sharing laughs, and making memories with wonderful neighbors who have endless patience with us.

Have you ever tried helping someone, only to realize they could have finished much faster without you? 😄

Meet Virgen de la Roca, watching over Baiona and its sailors since 1930. Her stone boat symbolizes the town's deep connection to the sea, making her one of Galicia's most unique landmarks.

High above Baiona stands Virgen de la Roca, one of Galicia's most recognizable landmarks.

More than just a beautiful viewpoint, she symbolizes protection over the town and the generations of fishermen and sailors whose lives have always been connected to the Atlantic.

One of the most unique details is the stone boat she holds in her hand, representing Baiona's deep maritime heritage. Inside the statue is a spiral staircase leading to the boat, where visitors can sometimes enjoy breathtaking views of Baiona, the coastline, and on clear days, the Cíes Islands. While it's not always open to the public these days, it's worth checking if you're visiting.

If you only watched a few seconds of this, you might think, "What on earth is going on?!”

Welcome to Rapa das Bestas in Sabucedo, one of Galicia's most fascinating traditions!

These are wild horses that spend the year roaming freely through the mountains. Once a year, they're brought together so the community can give them a health check, treat injuries if needed, administer medicine, trim their manes, and identify them before they're released back into the wild.

You'll see the aloitadores working without ropes or sedatives (the old fashion way) They rely on skill, teamwork, and generations of experience. Holding the tail and covering the horse's eyes helps steady and calm it so everyone, including the horse, stays as safe as possible during the process.

Some of the younger participants jump onto a horse for a few moments. For many local families, it's a proud tradition and a way of learning from the older generations before one day becoming aloitadores themselves.

These horses aren't just beautiful. They help Galicia too! By grazing naturally, they keep brush under control, which helps reduce the risk of wildfires and keeps the mountain ecosystem healthy.

It's one of those traditions that's impossible to understand from a 10-second clip. Seeing it in person and learning the "why" behind it makes all the difference.

Last weekend, we experienced one of Galicia's most beautiful traditions during the San Paio celebration in A Estrada... the incredible flower carpets!

These aren't painted on the streets. They're handmade by volunteers, families, neighbors, and local groups who spend hours (sometimes all night!) creating detailed designs using fresh flower petals, leaves, seeds, colored sawdust, and other natural materials. They're true works of art... with one very unique purpose.

Just by chance, we arrived moments before the religious procession began, so we got to admire the carpets while they were still untouched. Then, as the procession started, the participants walked right across them! At first that felt surprising, but that's exactly what they're made for. The carpets are created as an offering of faith and devotion, meant to honor the patron saint rather than last forever. Their beauty is temporary, which somehow makes them even more special.

This isn't something we're used to seeing, so it was fascinating to experience. It wasn't just the artwork... it was watching an entire community come together to create something beautiful, knowing it would only exist for a few moments.
