A crab spider awaits in a flower in ambush. These flowers are very popular among pollinators and it is very common to see spiders feeding on bees and flies attracted by the nectar produced by them.

The Solitary Eagle (*Buteogallus solitarius*) is one of the least-studied raptors of the Neotropics. This large eagle inhabits montane and foothill forests from Mexico to northwestern Argentina, including Ecuador, where it occurs primarily in forested uplands. Adults are characterized by their dark slate-black plumage, broad wings, and relatively short tail.

True to its name, it is usually observed alone or in pairs, soaring over rugged terrain and forested slopes. Although its natural history remains poorly known, available observations indicate that it preys on vertebrates such as reptiles, birds, and small to medium-sized mammals. The species occurs at naturally low densities and appears to require extensive tracts of intact forest.

The principal threats to the Solitary Eagle are habitat loss and fragmentation caused by deforestation, agricultural expansion, livestock production, and logging. Because of its rarity, low population density, and ongoing decline in habitat quality, it is currently classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. Protecting remaining montane forests is essential for the long-term conservation of this elusive apex predator.jocotoco

The Torrent Duck (*Merganetta armata*) is a specialist of the Andes’ rushing rivers. In Ecuador, these remarkable ducks inhabit cold, fast-flowing mountain streams, where they navigate turbulent waters with exceptional agility.

They forage by diving among submerged rocks, feeding primarily on aquatic insect larvae and other freshwater invertebrates. Unlike many waterfowl, Torrent Ducks spend their lives closely tied to river currents, with pairs maintaining territories along stretches of river that they actively defend.

An extraordinary example of adaptation to one of South America’s most demanding freshwater environments.

Phrictus belongs to the family Fulgoridae, a group of tropical planthoppers renowned for their remarkable head projections. Despite the common name “lanternfly,” these insects do not produce light. The function of their elongated cephalic structures remains uncertain, although they are thought to play a role in visual defense and predator deterrence.

Species of Phrictus occur throughout the Neotropics, where they feed on plant sap using specialized piercing-sucking mouthparts. Their striking morphology has made them an important subject in studies of evolution, mimicry, and diversification within the Fulgoridae.
