Gypsy Westwood Photography

Gypsy Westwood Photography Ibiza is my home. I was born and brought up here and love everything about it. This I think inspires Here an Ibiza or Anywhere it takes me.

I love photographing people, naturally and spontaneously, capturing real moments that are then kept forever. I specialise in Wedding Photography, Engagment and Couple Sessions, Family and Children Portraits and Pregnancy and baby Photography.

Nikon girl for 30 years. My take on going mirrorless and my new Nikon Z8 in 50 secs.

Auto focus is great - set at AF-C with 3D on people - swapping to AF-S centred focus when I want to control it myself. For details, not humans. Great for a wedding and portrait photographer.

The colours and exposure straight out of camera - set to Portrait - are pretty spot on (in most scenarios), though I do feel it is exposing darker compared to what I see in the viewfinder a lot of the time. The viewfinder is a computer screen, always brighter.

No sound, or the little fake shutter sound, is ‘dissatisfying’ LOL - for the clients as well. They don’t know if I am actually taking a photo. Good for some scenarios - at a wedding, in the quiet ceremony moment.

The digital viewfinder is ‘pants’ (that’s English for annoying/crap/not what I like). I don’t like it at all! LOL. It is, well... JUST DIGITAL. And contrasty and blue. So I keep wondering if I am taking my soft, delicate, natural light photos or not!

The computer inside is A LOT! I mean, how much do you need in one camera! I thought I just needed ISO, speed, aperture and autofocus. 😉

And that’s my take for now - happy to hear of settings I might be missing out on!

And here are some photos so far in stories.

Last month I got on stage, to talk about my photography career.
Well, actually, I asked a question.

It was a question that over my career I have often asked myself.
Not because I don’t believe I’m a good photographer or that wedding photographers matter but because it has always been a profession that was not respected in the big world of photography as something really creative. My approach to photographing a wedding has always come from a deep creative side from within me.
Inspired by what I see, and not so much what is expected of me or what others are doing.

This was my question:
By saying I am a wedding photographer, can I call myself a real photographer?

Where does it sit in the world of photography?

It made good conversation with all the other photographers speaking on stage. Landscape photographers, war photographers, artists photographers, travel photographers, music photographers.

I don’t think I’m alone in feeling this.

Wedding photographers (have you ever felt this), couples getting married, couples choosing their photographer:

What do you think, what is important to you when choosing your photographer?

MY WORKING LIFE IN CAMERAS
(Do you think Nikon should sponsor me!?)

Guess how many cameras I’m holding?
And how heavy they are (my neck actually seized up after doing this video mixed with some weight training LOL) get it right and I’ll DM the list of exactly all the cameras you can see.

It’s a lifetime of Nikons (yes, it’s been Nikon always) starting from my Nikon F90X (actually my FM2 was the first first) to my newest Z8.

Collectively they have photographed a few million snaps.
They all still work.
Tell me: do you keep your cameras?

I’m off to my first wedding, May is busy Ibiza wedding season.

But first, I thought I would take you off around Atzaro.
It is lush and grand, luxurious and beautiful, with so many corners and spots for amazing pictures.

Wedding planners, couples who have married here, photographers who have photographed here:
Don’t you agree?

I had a little play with the new Z8 - my initial thoughts are:

I think I’m going to be HAPPY!

It’s a minefield inside the set up, let’s see if I have got it right for how I want to use it.

I will know more as here in Ibiza the season is just starting to get really busy.

I bought it for the fast focus and digital viewfinder. Let’s see if it lives up to its fame.

I’m VERY curious to know how YOU use the autofocus: what setting do you stick to?

I want you to be the family you are. There are (brief) moments you might stay still. For that one or two classic all look...

I want you to be the family you are.

There are (brief) moments you might stay still. For that one or two classic all looking at the camera family photos but then I don’t want you to stay still.

Kids have a short attention span and like to move and run and jump.

So I move with them, and with all of you.

For me, that is the essence and the absolute fun of a family together (with small kids) making beautiful photos out somewhere in nature or in the comfort of your home, this bit is up to you.

The main important thing is about being you, that is my favourite way to begin.

Here are Francesca and Humphrey and their kids, Ibiza family wild, free and beautiful in one of our spring fields FULL of flowers.

Tizon did not stop moving. I mean how fun are these fields of daisy’s. Who wants to stay still here, when you can hide and jump and throw yourself in!?

Oh and the last photos were part of the test shots on the new cleaned working Mamiya RZ67.
Clean and dense.
What do you think?
