Anima Luce
A contemporary reinterpretation of the "Saint Jerome" iconographic tradition. This work is deeply inspired by Caravaggio’s mastery of light in his portrayals of the saint translating the Vulgate, as well as the meticulous textures and intimate atmosphere found in the Northern Renaissance works of Joos van Cleve.
In this piece, the traditional Memento Mori represented by the skull shifts its meaning; it is no longer just a reminder of mortality, but a reflection on the Truth of Christ’s Passion, visibly sealed by the crown of thorns crowning the skull. Every element on the table constructs this sacred narrative: the candle acts as the light of divine revelation and tempus fugit piercing the worldly shadows, while the reed pen held by the saint, the crucifix, and the three iron nails resting heavily on the open parchment explicitly anchor the scene to the physical act of translation and the sacrifice of the Cross.
Through the precise use of chiaroscuro, local color saturation, and organic textures, the image bridges the gap between 16th-century painting and modern fine art photography, capturing the tactile quality of the weathered bone and the absolute weight of sacred solitude.
