🔎Great spotted woodpecker - Dendrocops major thanneri

🏠 Spotted woodpeckers are common around Europe and Asia. This subspecies is endemic to the forests of Gran Canaria. 🇮🇨 I was so happy to finally get a picture of one as I have been searching for several years ! 📸

🍽 This species can feed on seeds, insects or even other species' young. They have been seen raiding nests using their beaks to make the entrances bigger. 👀

⚧️ This individual is a male as he has a red patch on the back of his neck. 🔴 Females are black in the same area ⚫️.

Blue bird fly 🐦🎶

🔎Tenerife blue chaffinch - Fringilla teydea

🏠 This bird is endemic to pine forests of Tenerife. Its cousin (Fringilla polatzeki) is endemic to the same forests in Gran Canaria. 🌲🇮🇨

🍽 It feeds mainly on pinecones but can also enjoy various insects during the reproductive period. 🕷🦋

⚧️ Males have blue plumage while females are brown. They reproduce at the end of spring and nest high up in the forests. 🪺

Hunting over the hills

🔎Common buzzard - Buteo buteo 🦅

🏠 Buzzards often live on the borders between forests and open fields. One allows them to nest in trees while the others are used as hunting grounds. 🏕

🍽 As an opportunistic species, this bird feeds mainly on rodents and other small mammals, whether hunted or as roadkill. 🐀

⚧️ Breeding happens between the end of winter and the end of February. Females lay 2 to 4 eggs and incubate them while males go out to hunt and feed the nest. 🥚

Raiding the rockpools
🔎Ruddy turnstone - Arenaria interpres
🏠 This bird can be found on the coasts worldwide, preferably in rocky areas. In winter, it migrates south to more pleasant climates. 🗺
🍽 They feed on invertebrates after finding them under shells and debris. This one gobbled up a massive chunk of baguette, leftover from the fishermen's morning snack. 🥖
⚧️ Breeding happens in Arctic grounds and adults plummage will change, developping bright rusty colours.

Colourful coastal crabs
🔎Sally lightfoot crab - Grapsus adscensionis
🏠 This species of crab is native to the rocky eastern coasts of the Atlantic ocean, specifically Ascencion island, West Africa and the Canary islands.
🍽 They forage amongst the rocks and feed on algae and animal scraps.
⚧️ Crabs reproduce when females loose their hard shell and produce a new one (a process called moulting). The young crabs are a darker colour, blending in better with their surroundings.

"-Oh la jolie moue...
-C'est un goéland!"
🔎Gull - Larus sp. 🪶
🏠 Gulls are a widespread group of sea birds. They can be found on the coast but also flying above the sea. As the species are very hard to differenciate, I am unable to give you more information about this particular bird's living arrangements.
🍽 These birds generally opt for an omnivorous diet, foraging invertebrates, fish or even sifting through your bins. Often they also get a bad reputation for stealing one's chips... 🍟
⚧️ Gulls are often found living in colonies. They lay eggs only once a year and are generally monogamous (one partner only). Parents must be watchful of their eggs and offspring however, as cannibalism of the young is a current practice... 👀

Mussel mania !
🔎Mussels - Mytilus sp.
🏠 Mussels live in intertidal areas, exposed to the air when the tide is low. They grow in groups to protect themselves from waves that could smash their shells.
🍽 They filter the water using their gills and collect particles to feed. Humans must be careful when eating them because they can host toxic bacteria and accumulate contaminants present in the water.
⚧️ Males release their s***m in the water. It penetrates the female's shell through the opening and leads to the formation of eggs. Did you know ? A single female can produce 5 to 12 million eggs a year !

🟨 Yellow jacobinia - Justicia aurea 🟨

This crazy plant is aptly know as the Brazilian plume flower. Originating from central America, it can be seen with flowers throughout autumn and winter and used as an ornamental plant in oceanic climates. 🏝

The long flowers are the product of a process called co-evolution : the flowers have gotten longer to adapt to their pollinator, the hummingbird. ↕️

This plant has also been proven to possess medicinal properties such as reducing blood sugar levels (Uddin et al., 2022). What other plants with medicinal properties can you name ? 💉🩺
